    swap 97 3.8 into 89 2.9 ranger ???

I just purchased an 89 ranger 2.9 regular cab. This is my second ranger. I also have a 92 4.0 extended cab with an automatic. The 89 has a bad motor and is missing the 5 speed transmission. I am considering putting a 3.8 engine and tranny from a wrecked 97 mustang in the 89 ranger. The mustang 3.8 swap would work for me because I have the complete mustang. My other option would be to take the 4.0 and automatic from my 92 ranger and scrap/part out the 92. But the 92 has 236000 miles on the engine and is burning about a quart of oil every 800 miles. Also, the 3.8 interests me because I have a 91 supercoupe engine that I can put in the truck at a later date if I can make the 3.8 work. Any input would be appreciated.

If you've got a complete car to take it from (and aren't afraid of some fabrication) Go for it! Let us know how it worked out.

the 3.8 motor is wider than a 351 and it's only been done once on RPS (for good reason). For that much fabrication to be done to get the 3.8 to fit, a 302 or a 2.3Turbo swap is MUCH MUCH MUCH more feasible/economical.

I am not afraid of a little fabrication or bleeding knuckles. I don't even mind figuring out the wiring. But, I can't do any welding. If there is alot of welding involved I will need to go another route. A friend is tryng to get me to put a 2.4 diesel in it.

Fabrication usually implies welding (crossmembers, mounts, exhaust, etc). Since the 3.8 was never a Ranger engine, those things don't exist.

I am going ahead with the 3.8 swap. A friend I work with is willing to help with any welding and fab work that I need.

Now, I am starting to reconsider. I may have spoken to soon. I just can't find enough info on the swap.

I know 3 or 4 people who did the swap in the past but not with the SC motor... to see the one on ebay click below

i have been trying to contact the guy who built this one for almost 2 years... the guy selling it on ebay is not the guy who built it... so im still not having any luck... if anyone knows this guy let him know i wanna talk to him! this truck looks almost identical to mine... its kinda freeky actualy outside the only difference is his has a shaker hood scoop and mine has a 79 mustang gt hood scoop..and out wheels are different... and i have the same motor going in... when i stumbled across this i was a little weared out how similar it was...

I decided to go ahead and put a 2.9 back into the truck. I found a runnung but wrecked 88 ranger 4x4 with 93k miles. I already pulled the engine, transmission, and transfer case. Looks like I still need to find a transmission though. I don't think I can use the transmission from the 4x4 unless I can find the correct tailshaft for it.
