View Full Version : 2001 Edge Transmission Shifting Question?

Hey guys whats up?

Hey question for everyone,

I have the 2001 Edge with the 5 Speed Auto. When I really get into it from a dead stop this truck will rev up high in first gear then it will shift VERY fast into what seems like second gear and it will only stay in second (or whatever it is) for a very short period of time. Then it shifts into the next gear (which I think is 3rd). It doesn't seem like a very smooth transition when shifting very fast.

Is this just me or do all the other 4.0 Liter auto 5 speed Edges seem the same way?

I know this is a new transmission from ford. I also know that this transmission uses electronic solenoids for shifting and requires a period of time to learn its shift points. But it seems like when you drive normal speeds for a period of time and then suddenly chaneg your driving habit rapidly it's almost like the transmission doesn't know how to act.

Does any of this make sense?

Thanks

My buddy has an edge with the auto. I have not noticed that when ridding with him and he has not said anything about it. He got it like 2 weeks ago.

Figures, that will probably be the next thing that is screwy.

Thanks

Shannon,

Mine will also do this at times. Mine will shift a little harder with the chip. 1st gear will go all the way to 6 grand before shifting to 2nd. 2nd and 3rd are alot shorter. I have notice if I reset the ECU from time to time it helps. If you anything like me....it's normal driving 30% and mashed through the floor the other 70%. The ECU learns and adjusts to the harsh driving. I would disconnect the battery for a little and see what you think for you add another problem to that long list you have. Later, Jason

my 2001 does the same thing once in a while but i found that it only does it when i let up just a tad when I gun it. You have to remember that this trans is always adjusting itself day to day with your driving habits.

I think what you're seeing is just the way the trans is geared. Mine runs up to around 5800 in each gear if I hold it floored. The trans ratios are:

1st - 2.47
2nd - 1.85
3rd - 1.47
4th - 1.00
5ht - .75

So there's little change between 1-2 and 2-3. I think they geared this thing about right, it never drops below about 5200 when going through the gears.

thats true mazda I never look at my rpms when i floor it. now that you said that it doesn't drop below 5200. Thanks I didn't know that.
