I just got an OHC installed recently in my ranger. But the temperature is a little off. Does anyone know how much a new temperature sensor costs and where online I could buy a new one. Thanks.

If not, that may be your problem instead of the temp sensor. I haven't hooked up my VSS wire yet (had the OHC in for 4 months now, lol), so the displayed temperature never goes up, only down, meaning that if I'm driving the truck in the morning as the temperature is increasing outside, my OHC never recognizes it. 2k3TremorJon Nov 06 2003, 03:37am Yah, the VSS is hooked up. It moves, it will do something like start off at 86 degrees when i start the truck, go up to 97 degrees, and then come back down. Its weird, I moved the temp sensor and it still does it. trevelyn1015 Nov 18 2003, 12:18am glad to see you posted this here, so i wouldn't see, jon... sorry it isn't working right. Zoom Nov 18 2003, 11:44am Now Jon is trying to hide from Christian. :) I wouldn't buy a new one, get another one from a junkyard. They're around $40 at a dealer. I think there's two different ones, one for pre-98 OHC's and another for 98 and up. Hoop Nov 18 2003, 11:46am How difficult is this to do? Sounds like something up my alley... KrazyRngr Nov 18 2003, 01:26pm Thanks for that info Nagata been meaning to ask bout that. I had my ohc installed this summer whent eh temp was like 90+ but now its gotten cold and my ohc reads 23 degrees. So what do I need to hook the VSS wire up too? do I juss splice it into the same sonor or wha? JDN2424 Nov 19 2003, 12:48am I called Downs Ford (Downsford.com). 1998 OHC temp sensor is $17 and change. Downs Ford is pretty good with pricing and have a huge Motorsports section. Ninety6Ranger Nov 19 2003, 12:55am Which wire do I tap into for my VSS? I was going to hook mine up but couldnt find the wires. nagataXLT Nov 19 2003, 03:48am Originally posted by Ninety6Ranger Which wire do I tap into for my VSS? I was going to hook mine up but couldnt find the wires. Matt, that's the same thing I've been asking since I installed my OHC. So far, the only answer I've gotten was from Pepe, and he said it was the grey/black wire coming off of the EEC. Krazy - Yeah, I'd say you need to hook up your VSS wire also. My OHC resets the temperature after the truck has been shut off for a while, so it's close to accurate a few minutes after I start the truck, but once I start it up, the temperature only goes down, never up. Zoom Nov 19 2003, 11:29am You can tap into it on one of the wires on the GEM, which is to the left of the radio. You can either pull the radio out to get to it, or pull the surround off. I don't have which wire it is, but here's a pic of what the GEM looks like and the wire harness from it. Or you can go over to www.generation-edge.com and it's in the how-to's. Just hover over them until the drop down appears, then click on the OHC link. If it's the black/gray off the ECU, it should be the same one off the GEM. JDugan4859 Nov 20 2003, 03:17am Here is the wiring digram, I got this off here several years ago, but through all the changes I think it has been lost a couple times, so I will go ahead and post it again so it is here. BTW Zoom is that a pic of your 01 that you used for the picture? its been a while since I yanked mine out but I dont think I got that behind my 94 but one of these days when Im done being a lazy azz Ill go and check Mavrik_Choppers Mar 08 2006, 06:59pm I have a 97 3.0 auto and I DON'T have a GEM.... If I do it isn't behind the radio. I pull the radio to wire everything up from the car domain instructions.... which were a great help.... and nothing..... so I go buy a chilton's manual and look for GEM.... nada. EEC is the only thing I have with a VSS wire. Grey with a black stripe is the color and it seems to be working ok but there are some trouble shooting things I need help with. First off... I have a sunroof adapted console from a 97 Mountaineer. I checked the wiring and it seems to be the same thing. So says the Ford dealer. So hookup and install go as planned.... find a burned out light.... replace it. Forget to use a switched power source.... fixed. Finally get it mounted and turned on in the proper manner... the compass only reads south and southwest. When it read everything before. And the temp now goes up and down like crazy. The VSS wire is hooked up, the temp sensor is boxed in "temporarily" in the stock Mountaineer location in an effort to stop the jumping temp. And all the wiring and boards look in perfect condition. Any suggestions??? Any help would be appreciated. Rockledge Mar 08 2006, 07:51pm I have a 97 3.0 auto and I DON'T have a GEM.... If I do it isn't behind the radio. I pull the radio to wire everything up from the car domain instructions.... which were a great help.... and nothing.....That's interesting that you can't find a GEM back there. Is there any kind of module-looking thingy back there at all? Does your truck have power windows and locks? Also, it's a long shot, but try looking for the GEM on a bracket to the RH side of the steering column, on the instrument panel reinforcement. PickupMan92 Mar 08 2006, 07:53pm ok it's really great people are searching but figgin up 3 year old threads is just over-freakin-doin it..... for a Gen3, contact "redneckstone0202" on here he has put a OHC in his Gen3 and it works fine. Rockledge Mar 08 2006, 08:24pm ok it's really great people are searching but figgin up 3 year old threads is just over-freakin-doin it..... Uh huh, and if he had started a new thread, someone like you would have come along and told him to "do a search", because that's just how it goes (darned if you do, darned if you don't). PickupMan92 Mar 09 2006, 11:40am he's asking a new questions concerning another model year. it wasn't covered in this topic so posting in it really wouldn't matter.... he asked a new question that wasn't answered, woulda been the same as him makeing a new thread. as long as people are willing to do a search, that's fine, it's the constant repetitivness makes things annoying... Mavrik_Choppers Mar 09 2006, 04:48pm Sigh..... Why would it be a problem where I posted my question as long as I was actually ASKING a question in the first place. I find it funny how you flame me for posing in a thread where the title says OVERHEAD CONSOLE TEMP SENSOR... regardless of what brand I got my OHC from it's still an OHC. AND I STILL have a temp sensor problem. I could've been a total moron and posted it in the interior forum and then had it moved to here.... that would've made me even dumber still. So in my opinion and the opinion of several others... bringing up a 3 year old thread would be easier than making a new one.... considering it is mostly the same topic. Somehow I don't see the repetitiveness..... I think you'll have to explain that to me. Mavrik_Choppers Mar 09 2006, 04:52pm OR.... your reply without all the explatory madness would've been great... but that might have been a little hard. I called ford... My particular truck does NOT have a GEM... they even needed to look at my VIN number to find out where to splice my wire. I have power EVERYTHING.... it's wierd. Thanks for the help though... The Ford tech did my wiring for me so now everything works great... and believe it or not... guaranteed for life. Imagine that. Finz Mar 09 2006, 04:55pm If you have cruise control then you can also access vss wire from lower steering column. Also your compass will act up if you dont calibrate it. As far as temp sensors...there are many in jy's (and small enough to pocket) The sensor is located behind left headlight in bumper area on explorers. Get the one with blue wire because theres another sensor by it that looks similar. rwenzing Mar 09 2006, 05:38pm OR.... your reply without all the explatory madness would've been great... but that might have been a little hard. Your 97 has either a Central Timer Module or a Generic Electronic Module, depending on power equipment options. They are similar boxes but the GEM has more wires. The Ford documentation shows the connectors near the glove box but is not specific about exactly where the module is bolted down. Glad to hear that you got it working. Here is the compass calibration procedure in case they didn't do it at the dealer. http://home.comcast.net/~rwenzing/Console_compass_cal1.jpg Mavrik_Choppers Mar 09 2006, 06:17pm Oh man that is friggin awesome!!!! I live near Rockford, IL which is in the middle of the width if the state and right on the Wisconsin state line... cannot tell exactly from the pic but that would make me zone 8 right?? Thanks for all the help rwenzig... that makes it so much easier than taking it back to the dealer... rwenzing Mar 09 2006, 06:32pm Oh man that is friggin awesome!!!!
