all you need is a 1/2 inch socket...your ride will get a little stiffer, and i've heard that is puts a lot of stress on your cv joints on your front axles....my edge is a 2wd so i didnt have that problem...ive had my bars cranked for about 22k miles now without ever getting it aligned and my tires look fine....

I've had my torsion bars cranked for over a year no problems. I never bothered with an alignment, and my tires aren't wearing funny. Jack the front end up off the ground, the socket size is 13mm. You may need a breaker bar or torque wrench, because the bolts are kind of tight. Crank them in about 3 full turns and set the truck down, so you can see the progress

You have to have a 98+ 4x4, or 2000 Trailhead, or EDGE Ranger to be equipped with torsion bars.

It increases the preload on the front suspension so you sit higher

Does this make the Bars weaker...or wear them out or the joints?

well i think i've screwed up on mine... i was playing with em awhile back and jacked em up...ran for a few months like this... i think around 5 - 6 turns... but i brought it back down...for about a week then i decided i liked it alot better jacked up... will when i razed it i forgot to write down how many times i turned em... my alignment is way off now and i wanted to bring them down just a bit... i guess i overtightened them... is there away to get them back to a factory setting so i can start over i guess you can say?

Maxing the bolts out and then lowering it from there, measure as you go...

You should probably look into getting some new bolts before doing anything. Those bolts have thread locking compound, similar to lock nuts or bolts, to keep them from backing themselve off. When you cranked them up then backed them off it destroyed that compound, not that you would know this. But yes you should replace the bolts or you may have to deal with perpetual allignments for the life of the truck, and it's just cheap insurance.

You may be able to get them from the local parts store, personally I'd go to Ford just for the fact that these are not standard bolts, but specialized for this specific application.

i have a torsion bar question

i just got a 04 EDGE 4x2 and i was checking it out and noticed that the drivers side bolt is at least 1 inch screwed in more then the passenger side bolt, the truck almost looks like its leaning also.

should the bolts be screwed in equal amounts or is there some reason why they are different ?

could one bar be stronger , or did somebody not do there job right at the factory?

I noticed my truck sits a little over 1/2 inch higher on the passenger side. I guess its normal for them to be off a bit. I do plan to even them out here soon.

well i cranked them in 3.5 turns each (the truck only has 700 miles on it) and i would say it raised it almost 2 inches, i measured the front fenders at the center of the wheel and both are within 1/8th of an inch of eachother.
