View Full Version : Where to get a panhard bar
badblackranger Nov 18 2003, 10:55pm I just ordered my parallel 4-link from jason but i dont know what to do about a panhard bar. Jason said he could make one if i gave him measurement and what kinda brackets i need, can anyone help me out? Also is there a panhard bar i can order somewhere that is already made? Thanks

might be better off having jason make it. cheaper and stronger i'll bet. just get an idea of what you need first. IMO the longer the bar the better. do a search!
BlueWraith Nov 19 2003, 04:00am I can make a tracrod or panhard bar for you if you want. Give me the length from heim to heim and how thick ya want it, and I'll get ya a price.
The things are put on drag racers and circle track cars, so I'm pretty sure it will stand up to the abuse a minitruck can dish out.
badblackranger Nov 19 2003, 10:34pm I was talking to Jason and he said that the bar should go from the frame almost all the way to the other frame rail and weld to the axle. Thats why im kinda doubtful of the airride bar b/c its so short. Hey jory im interested in that bar,is that one that you make? Got any pics or anything? Thanks

I have Jason's parallel 4 link and I got the panhard bar kit from here.
It comes with the tabs to use if you were going to mount the panny bar like you would with a hotrod and coil overs. Basically, the axle mount, instead of behind the axle like we want, is designed to be on the top of the axle. You will have to design your own axle mount.
It comes with two tabs. ONe short and one long. THe short one gets welded to the frame on one side.
THe bar was too long for the Ranger application, so you will have to take it to a machine shop and have it cut to length and rethreaded.
Be sure to get the threads right. One end is RH threads, the other LH threads.
GOod luck.
badblackranger Nov 22 2003, 08:58pm Is there not an easier way to do it than that? Does anyone know what length it needs to be and what brackets i will need to install it? I know that it has to go behind the axle since the bags will be on the axle. Airride's bar looks like it will sit right on top of the axle which is no good. Jason said he would make me one but i dont know what exactly i need for it

BlueWraith Nov 24 2003, 04:46am Jory is Jory.. BlueWraith is Brandon. :E
Measure how long you need the arm to be, and I can shoot you a price. It will include brackets and such that you weld to the frame and then to the axel.
Usually what we do is trac rods. They bolt from one corner of the 4link to the other corner (lower front passenger to lower rear driver) and handle quite well. I'd have to get a bit more information on that though.
Either bar ya choose will have left and right hand heims with jamnuts. What size bolts and heims are in your 4 link now? You might be able to use the same brackets that we do for our tracrods. I wish I had a pic of the completed setup to explain better..
RedRanger92 Nov 24 2003, 05:35am My parallel 4link and panhard bar came from Jason too. I just gave him the length from the notch to where I thought I would mount the mount to the axle. He then took into consideration tabs, mount and bar. If you are off by an inch or two, don't sweat it. You can always trim down the tabs that will connect to the notch.

badblackranger Nov 24 2003, 09:30am Well i emailed Jason with a pic of the bar dustin posted(by the way thanks bro) and we're gonna talk tomorrow about it b/c he has a few ideas. If that doesnt work i'll shoot one of you guys a pm about making me one. Hey red, do you happen to remember how long your bar was? I talked to Rudy and his is 30 inches but he said that was cutting it close so im thinkin 28 or 29 inches, does that sounds right? By the way thanks for all the help guys.

With a parallel 4 link suspension, the panhard bar is what keeps the axle from shifting side to side under normal driving conditions.

badblackranger Nov 26 2003, 10:38pm Well it looks like im gonna be jason's guinea pig for a new panhard bar design. he is gonna make me a lower axle bag mount that also has a mount for the panhard bar, thus less welding for me to do. just weld the bag mount, bolt the panhard to it and weld the other bar mount to the inner notch plate!Sounds pretty sweet I get up some pics when i get it in a week or 2. Btw does the panhard need to be parallel to the ground(straight) at ride height or does it matter as long as it is parallel to the axle?
BlueWraith Nov 27 2003, 01:36pm Parallel to axel will work, and parallel to the ground is for looks. When you go up and down, its angle to the ground will change, since the axel wont move but the frame will.
Mathius Apr 02 2004, 09:10pm Will someone please give me a quick sketch of a panhard bar and how it works?
I had invisioned a simple bar like a crossmember that the 4-link bars attached to, keeping the axle seated in place, but I did a search on the web and pictures showed several bars configured in a sortof "z" with two of them bolted to the differential.
I think I need a better understanding of how this works before I go deciding how to setup my truck.

TX Ranger Apr 02 2004, 11:10pm I've been thinking about my rear setup, i need to get off my ass and get it done. But anyways, my friend has an 00 S10 with the Ekstensive 2 link kit. You know the ones that just slide over the rail and bolt in, yada yada. Anyways, I've been looking at his panhard and wondering how effective it (or similar) would be on a Ranger. I cant find a damn pic of it, but it's basically bolted to the axle with u bolts on one end, crosses over to the opposite side and has a plate welded to the end that bolts to the frame rail. Not exactly a novel concept, but has anyone tried this before? His setup has given him zero trouble in over 2 years of daily driving, so I'm not exactly skeptical of it.
jbhill Apr 03 2004, 10:33am i have a panhard bar on my 2 link nad it hanldles great and works excellent
