I just pulled an airbag Module(pass. Side) out of an explorer. Is my truck wired for it to be plugged in w/ the little connector thingy.....or does it have to have a brain to control it?

View Full Version : Putting in airbag module? kev_1669 Nov 21 2003, 03:55am I just pulled an airbag Module(pass. Side) out of an explorer. Is my truck wired for it to be plugged in w/ the little connector thingy.....or does it have to have a brain to control it? BrianB31 Nov 25 2003, 10:28am It should be the same. What year Explorer was it pulled out of? Another way to check is call your local Ford dealer and ask them if the Airbag is the same between the two vehicles. kev_1669 Nov 25 2003, 08:45pm I already have it put in, I just want to know if I plug the Connector that is behind the old airbag cover into the Airbag, will it still go off in the event of a crash since I have a Drivers Side Airbag? SilverRangerGuy Nov 26 2003, 01:19am It should since you haven't seen an airbag light pop up on the cluster gauge. smdandb2 Nov 26 2003, 01:16pm Originally posted by SilverRangerGuy It should since you haven't seen an airbag light pop up on the cluster gauge. Thats because the passenger plug is plugged into a dummy resistor box. If you unplug it, the airbag light blinks. So that shows me that Ford tricked the computer to think it was there (so they didnt need a different harness for trucks without the airbag). kev_1669 Nov 26 2003, 11:31pm Originally posted by smdandb2 Thats because the passenger plug is plugged into a dummy resistor box. Exactly, So if I take the resistor thnigy off and stick it into the Airbag, will it work? BlueWraith Nov 28 2003, 11:49am In theory, yes. Call and check with a few ford dealers first though, just to make sure. The reason I say a few is that some of them will give you the runaround and have you bring it to them where they can charge you $50 to do something you can do in 30 seconds. kev_1669 Jan 18 2004, 03:30pm Alright, I finally got around to doing this.......Guess wat?....The connectors are different....If I spliced them and put quick dicnects on them and plug them together....does any one see a problem in that???????? BlueWraith Jan 19 2004, 05:44am If you can get the right wires right, then I see nothing wrong with it, yet I still agree with my post above... it wouldn't be very fun if the airbag goes off while your connecting wires. smdandb2 Jan 19 2004, 11:46am Originally posted by BlueWraith If you can get the right wires right, then I see nothing wrong with it, yet I still agree with my post above... it wouldn't be very fun if the airbag goes off while your connecting wires. HAHAHA, I agree. Make sure you are facing the other direction of the bag when you hook it up. And make sure you have a video camera watching you. If it deploys, show us the video! :) :) BlueWraith Jan 19 2004, 10:33pm That reminds me of totallypolished and their "other uses for an airbag" vid. :E Too bad they had to take it down.. kev_1669 Jan 20 2004, 12:02am Originally posted by BlueWraith If you can get the right wires right, then I see nothing wrong with it, yet I still agree with my post above... it wouldn't be very fun if the airbag goes off while your connecting wires. LMFAO!!!!! Yeah, That would be funny!!!!! Thaere are only 2 wires....one ground and one power, shouldnt be 2 difficult! Thanks guys! Ill tell ya if it werks! BlueWraith Jan 20 2004, 04:35am Ah, well then it shouldn't be too hard. I've never worked with an airbag.. Just be sure to hook the ground up to ground, and the power wire NOT to power... but the signal wire. I can imagine the fun of hooking up an airbag to a switched +12... turn on the truck, airbag goes off... :E kev_1669 Jan 20 2004, 05:09am Originally posted by BlueWraith Ah, well then it shouldn't be too hard.
