View Full Version : Lowering a 4x4!!! *gasp*
myndfi3ld Nov 25 2003, 08:16am Flame away, but i'm thinking about lowering my 4x4. Is there any way to lower a 1994 4x4? it has the TTB suspension (i think that's what it is called).. could I just get new shocks and coils and then an alignment? i look all over the place but i can't find anything on lowering a 4x4. i want to get some 18s or 19s with low profile tires, that'll give me a few inches of lowering, but then the wheelwell gap will be terrible and i know i'll want to lower the truck.

You can get new springs for it, but I think you might have some binding problems if you try to use the 4x4 mode.

well if i went through with this, i would slap my 31 inch all-terrains back on for the winter, so would that still be an issue?
EDIT: i definitely wouldn't be needing the 4x4 during any time other than winter... but i think i understand what you said now, would the problem be due to the lowering and not the change of tire size?

nusensesd Nov 26 2003, 12:50am There have been people that lower a 4X however its not that easy.
With a ford TTB front end the only way to get it down is going to cut the springs or swap them out for ones that are shorter. You are going to have problem aligning it if you go more than a couple inches. If you have a newer 4X you could probably get a little lower and still align it..
Unfortunately this is probably something you don't want to hear but if you want if you want to lower a truck it will be easier to get a 2X..

and that just isn't going to happen in this part of the country. :( my dreams are shattered, i guess i'll just get some 18s with not-that-low profile summer tires or something.

me....well, sort of.
Hole-Shot Nov 26 2003, 05:11am Hey, by looking at your pics I don't think you have that much of a wheel gap. I think 2" in the front, 3"-4" in the rear would give you the desired stance, as well as 18" rims with a low-profile tire. I wouldn't go crazy with the tires, because of your speedometer and the wheel gap would be increased by smaller profile tires.

they wouldn't be low profile at all unless i went for a really small diameter.. what diameter are your tires, just for reference? i'd have to get 265/60/18 to maintain the same tire diameter, so i if i went 2 inches smaller in diameter it would look like only 1 inch of lowering in the front. as it is right now, i think 2" front 4" rear would definitely give me the stance i want, but then if i went with lower profile tires i think it wouldn't anymore. i don't have the money to do this right now anyways, but i'm just looking for plans
Hole-Shot Nov 27 2003, 07:39am I have 225/40R18 tires.
You can do 2" in the front for free by cutting your stock coils, and 2.5" in the back for free just buy flipping your hangers. I don't know if you have stock lifting blocks, like other 4x4 Rangers, so you could check into that as well - that would total up to 4" of rear drop.
All you would need to do is spend $30 on camber adjusters and get an alignment which can run you around $70.

could I also just buy new coils? i don't want to be one of those lowered civics that bounce violently going down the street because their springs were cut.
Hole-Shot Nov 27 2003, 10:14pm Yes, you could by newer, fancier coils. But to be honest, unless you're buying top-notch springs (like them progressive spring rate jobbers), they're not going to be any different than cutting your coils. I should have cut my coils instead of wasting the $70 on AIM springs...

might be a waste of money, but it's probably a lot easier. cutting coils seems like it's a difficult thing to do.
it isn't. Take the coil out, and get a cutting disc for your grinder. Your cutting disc will cut so fast that the coil won't heat up.
Took me about 30 mins to take both coils out, cut 'em and reinstall.
myndfi3ld Nov 28 2003, 03:51am i guess this shows how undecided i am, i'm currently browsing the net looking for lift kits for my truck. i'd like to have my truck as low as Hole-Shot's ranger, but since i can only lower 2 inches or so, it would just make my truck look like a stock 4x2. since i already debadged all those 4x4 decals i don't think i want to make it look even more like a 4x2. thanks for all the advice, but I guess lowering my truck was just not meant to be.
