View Full Version : 4 link, leveraged or bags on axle?
Ok, obviously with a leveraged setup you can get more lift, and a better ride, and with bags on axle, you get quicker lift, but less, and a bumpier ride.
What do you guys prefer, and why?
BumpinRanger93 Nov 26 2003, 08:02am i think i would like the better ride with more lift,
i drive the truck every day an want comfort.....i dont need the thing going up so fast i can flip a coin off the bed cover.....
just want to drop it an raise it...
my 2 cents
bumpin out
Romeo86 Nov 26 2003, 08:37am if bags areon the bars then u get great lift with less psi and it should be just as fast
TX Ranger Nov 26 2003, 08:43am IMO ride quality is more important than speed, especially on a daily driver. The difference in speed isn't stellar, if you were talking 20 seconds compared to 2 seconds then it would be different, but with all things except location similar, it's not enough to sacrifice ride quality.
Amount of lift is an added bonus, so you can impress all your friends, well those that are impressed by lift anyways.
S10Hunter Nov 26 2003, 08:47am Cantil....oops, "leveraged" would be so much better. Mount the bags outside the frame on the lower bars. That'd be mint.
butter428 Nov 26 2003, 09:59am Actually, it takes more psi and more air to get the bags up, since there is a lot more weight on them.
I have mine on the bars and I hate it, I'm putting them on the axle next month unless I come up with something better. I can't play with it at all. I have 10 gallons of air at 150 psi, if I'm all the way down and I raise the front and back up, and then want to drop the rear and raise it again, there's barely enough air to get it off the ground.
bluedge Nov 26 2003, 10:38am It also depends on where the bags are on the lower bars. If they are right by the pivot, itll be tons of lift, but take lots of air and be bad for daily driver. If its right next to the axle on the lower bars, itll be pretty much like having them over axle. So its really not just a black and white thing...you can put them anywhere. I plan to put mine probably 8 inches or so in front of the axle (well over halfway down the lower bar) to get good lift and ride, but not have to pump tons of air in to lift.

i liked my bags over the rearend better then bags over bars, im goin back to bags over the rearend now.
I really like the idea of getting tons of lift like butter428, but it'd be pretty impressive to hop the back end too...
Read an ariticle in last months Streetrucks (I think) about a nice leveraged triangulated four link on a little 'yota that hopped with about 180 psi. I know my compressor can handle that kind of pressure, but will I need special (expensive) bags? Any kind of special tank required for pushing 180-200 psi?
S10Hunter Nov 27 2003, 03:43am I know Airlift makes a solid bag and everyone seems real happy with them. I think they can handle some minor hopping. I have 2B7's but they're sitting around waiting for me to build a 4 link and buy a compressor so I couldn't tell you about how they actually perform.
butter428 Nov 27 2003, 04:53am My friend hops the back end of his S-10 with 165 psi and the bags over the axle. He has a regular Airlift tank, regular air line, SMC valves, and Slam Bags.
Once you start pumping 180-200, then you need to look into a different tank, valves, bags, and airline.
What kinda pressure do you need to run at ride height with bags over axle?
another question - what do you guys prefer, run valves right off the tank, or run them closer to the bags....
Woodrow Nov 27 2003, 01:34pm butter how many psi are u putting to get to ride height in the rear?
mine is a leaver, and I have to put only like 30 psi in the rear and its at ride height, its a lil to squishy for my likes
butter428 Nov 28 2003, 01:34am I need about 70-80 psi in the bags to get to ride height.
My friend puts 25-30 psi in his bags, they're over the axle.
I mounted my front valves close to the bags because it's a pretty long path from the rear of the bed all the way up front. I can tell a difference from when I had the valves on the tank. In the rear, it doesn't matter too much since the tank is right by the bags anyway.
newstylecustoms Nov 28 2003, 03:38am I have my bags on the upper bars halfway down. So I get 10" lift and compromise between lift and ride. It rides soft right now but that is mostly because I need better shocks and mounts. There I would say the best way would be to mount them on the bars but closer to the axle end than the pivot. Bags over axle is really stiff.
Did you build your own radius arms?

newstylecustoms Nov 28 2003, 08:06am Yes, I built forward facing radius arms and I will soon be making it a forward four link with new bag mounts for mechanical advantage.
Romeo86 Nov 28 2003, 10:55am i was wonderin what those were. how did u mount those to the frame
newstylecustoms Nov 28 2003, 11:43am For what is in the picture I made a new crossmember that mounts under the core support out of 2x3 tubing. I don't think that I will use the same mounting points for the four link.
hayn_surferboy Nov 28 2003, 03:09pm I got mine mounted over the axle.
I got 2b6's and i get to ride height (4/5 drop) with about 70 psi in them, i think it rides great, alot better than the static drop but a little too soft, but i do need to get better shocks too, they don't even do anything they're way to soft.
If my tank has about ~150psi i can hop the back a little about an inch or two. I got 1/2" lines and 3/8" valves and air lift bags
got a bunch of pics here: http://ftw.truckmoxie.com/mygallery.ten?id=5156&album=10762
there's also a bunch of other in the other albums, also got a bunch of pics of the install in one album
goose Dec 05 2003, 10:21am Mine are over the axle. I am paranoid about riding too low in back cuz my tank is still in the stock location. I also ripped my roll pan off of one side when I drove too low.
As for ride, when I have it tucking a little bit of tire, it rides nice. But I don't have gauges and don't know how much PSI I have in them at all times. So usually I have it up about an inch or two over the rear tires and it is stiff and bumpy.
My shocks are mounted up top in the stock locations and I welded new lower mounts on the axle. I think I need to move the upper mounts to the bridge so the shocks are more vertical at ride height. They are almost parallel to the ground at ride height and I doubt they can work correctly like that.
I have never rode in a truck with leveraged bags so I cannot speak from experience about them.
Mine is quick with just 1/2" line and 3/8" SMC's. At like 100PSI it jumps up and jars the hell outta me.
phat96 Dec 05 2003, 10:54am man over the axle is mint enough on my dime as long as you are running shocks, I drove it from my house to go get the shocks that were at my dads shop and it was horrible but with the shocks its fine and thats a mono with 4 inch blocks too. I ride tucking about 1 inch maybe alittle more of my 20 inch rim in back.
IMO bags are over the axle is plenty of lift too, i guess im just not impressed by lift, why bag your truck to ride high? And if you did want a little more lift run a F9000 over the axle.
laidoutranger Dec 07 2003, 01:48pm personally like the bag mounted on the lower bar. I had the bags mounted over the axle with a 4 link and it was really stiff. I bagged an 85 ranger put the bag and shock on the bar and it gets 29" of lift with 150psi and rides pretty good at all heights
