hey first time to this site, hopefully someone will have an idea. my son has an 1986 ranger 4x4 v-6 fuel injected motor. when you try to start it it turns over but won't start. the fuel pump relay clicks, but no power going out to the pumps.we hooked it up directly to the fuse box and it runs great, but i told him we need to figure out why it won't work how its supposed to.i have exposed alot of the wiring harness to figure out the path of the wiring for the pump and i haven't found any broken wires or anything. we replaced the ignition switch, have tried like 3 other known working relays, out of bronco 2's, same engine, there is power going to the relay from the starter solinoid or relay ,whatever its called, which is a yellow wire ,but the wire that comes out of the pump relay that goes to the inerta switch has no power.the inerta switch is not tripped.i am not sure which direction the power is supposed to come from.its kinda confusing but if anyone has ANY ideas for me to check i would really appriciate it. thanks in advance. wendy

Get a paper clip and put it in the connector for the interia switch. Just put one end of the paper clip in one side of the connector and the other end of the clip in the other side. See if that makes it work.

Going on from what 92sport said... the intertia switch is usually in the passenger side floorboard on the firewall. You might have to pull the carpet back some to find it. Its there on my '94, anyways. :)
Before you try the paperclip deal, there should be a little red button on the top of it. Push the button down. Let go and it should stay. If not, it might already be good to go. Smack it with something and see if the button pops up.
Ah.. the intertia switch. Great theft deterrent and practical joke. :)

Check the connection for the relay...you may not be getting power out of it because there's no connection being made. Meaning, you could have a pushed pin... I'm not too familiar with the 86 Ranger's...but on an 86 GT we had a similar problem. The pump would run with it straight in the fuse box, but not when wired normally. Turns out the relay WAS bad..even though it was making a slight click. I don't have my Haynes manual handy at the moment to see what's between the relay and the inertia switch. Have you checked both sides of the switch for power? It COULD be bad. Just a thought...good luck.
