My friend has these fog lights that he can sell me for $20. But the thing is he doesnt have any of the wiring, and they're really nice fogs. So my question is does anyone have a diagram as to what i need for wires? Like what wires would go where and how i could just hook them up to a switch that i would turn them on when needed?

Also what type of wire would i buy?

Thanks a bunch.

Chris

there should just be a ground (usually black but sometimes white) and a hot wire (which is your juice)....sometimes you will have 2 of the same color of wire, in this case it doesn't matter which is hot or ground, and sometimes there will just be one wire and that is your hot and the ground is grounded inside the light.....

ok, ground your ground wire if you have one. you can do a few things with your hot wire though.....if you want to run the fogs with your headlights on, the just tie your hotwire into your headlight switch. if you want to run them off of a seperate switch then you have a little bit more work to do....you need to run a wire (use about an 8 gauge size wire) off of your positive terminal on your battery and put an inline fuse on it, that will run to your power terminal on your switch. you also need to ground your switch, do so by hooking a wire to the ground terminal on your switch and ground it to a good ground. the third terminal will be what the hot wire off of your lights will hook up to!!!

For the wire coming off of your lights just add on to it with the same size wire...your ground wire should be very close to the same size as your hot wire!!!!

hope that helps.....if you need anymore info email me at "slimmysalamander@hotmail.com" or message me on AIM, my SN is "gregsalatino"

While what greggy said will work, I would suggest a different approach. A relay is much safer and more conventional way of doing this and gives you a lot more flexibility. A relay is basicly a remote controlled high current swicth. You can use anything you want to switch the relay on and off and it uses very little amperage and very small wire. It is safer, less resistance, and you don't need to pull massive wire into the cab attached to a massive switch. If do it Greggy's way, 8 gauge is a *bit* excessive.

10-12 gauge wire from battery (+) to Relay Pin 30 with an inline fuse near the battey. Use what ever fuse value is appropriate for you wattage lights.

10-12 gauge wire from relay pin 87 to the + wire of the fog lights.

18-22 gauge wire from relay pin 85 to ground.

18-22 gauge wire from relay pin 86 to to the [switch].

Now, you can use any number of things as a switch to turn them on and off.

1. An actual switch. Any old switch will do since you are only using a few hundred milliamps to turn the relay on and off. The switch will need a +12 power feed, also 18-22 gauge wire. For this, you can just tap right into the fuse panel. Pick one that turns on and off with the ignition, that way your lights will never be left on when the truck is off and kill your battery.

2. Ignition switched constant. Connect the wire from pin 86 right to an ignition switched circut in the fuse box. This will turn the fog lights on and off with the truck constantly.

3. Switched with other lights. You can tap the wire from pin 86 into your parking light, low beam, or high beam wires to have the fog lights syncronized with any of them. You also don't need to run any wires into the cab for this. Just tap it into the headlight wires right under the hood. I usually favor this option because I don't like to be turning a million buttons on and off when I start and stop and I have enough crap coming into the cab already.

Here is a picture of the bottom of a typical automotive relays have the 87a pin so just ignore it. Don't use it if you do have it:

OK thanks both of you helped me out a lot, but where can i find the relay? Do i have to buy one and if so how much? Or is there one on my truck somewhere?

Thanks a bunch.

Chris

Also the lights are 55w so what fuse should i use?

Autozone and radioshack both carry relays. If you go to radioshack, be sure to get one for 12 volt use. They have several... heh

Autozone has I think 30 or 40 amp relays.

Ah! Better idea then buying a relay and a bunch of wire... buy a relay and a bunch of wire togeater! I just remember that autozone sells kits that have a switch and relay with all the wireing you'll need to hook them up. I dont remember the price.... I think its around $10 or $15. About the same you'd pay for wire and the switch.

yes i'd also recommend a relay. nice and safe and simple. that's what i used for my fogs
