View Full Version : ford thunderbird 3.8 can anything be used on 2.9?
jdimassi Sep 14 2001, 10:19pm i found a bunch of 3.8s at the scrap yard was wondering if i can use that stuff on my ranger like the throttle body intake setup stuff like that let me know if you guys have done any of this what about injectors do the injectors interchage?? thats mainly what i need to grab o yea and my trucks down the shop again for the tranny lol no reverse and no shifting goes 25mph at 5000rpm
Ken00 Sep 15 2001, 01:26pm Sorry to hear about the tranny. I don't think there is much you could swap from a 3.8, the 87 has the bigger TB. Don't know much about injector swaps but if they are at the JY they might be clogged up from sitting. I was reading Pat's board and they talked about a place that will rebuild them, here is a link to the post. Good luck.

jdimassi Sep 16 2001, 10:49am yea i was just wondering seeing that a junk yard round here is packed with them are there any other fords to look for parts interchangeable with 2.9 or do i have to just keep lookin for a bII or ranger cause ive had no luck findin any found a truck today maybe to replace my ranger for the time being big ol chevrolet 89 1500 V8 100k $500
Ken00 Sep 17 2001, 11:23am I'n not sure what other vehicles had the same tranny. The one person that knows a lot about swaps is AllanD, make sure you tell him EXACTLY what you have and need. He doesn't work on autos but he might be able to tell you what vehicles had the A4LD and he might know were to get a good one, he's not to far from here, he's in PA.
Weren't the A4LD's form Explorers the same but a little beefier?
jdimassi Sep 17 2001, 05:17pm i heard something like that too they changed name to 455rm somethign of that sort and there controlled by computer or something i have no clue i been without a vehicle from end of july till like august 25 had it from then till about a week ago and it died so i dont know been lookin at chevys for time being so
Ken00 Sep 17 2001, 06:51pm The 4R44E, which was used with the 3.0L Rangers from around 95 to 2000 is mechanically identical to the A4LD but not electonically. The A4LD started as the C-3 in the Pinto, LOL. They also made a 4R55E, heavy duty 4R44E, for the Explorer.
The goods show up yet JD?

jdimassi Sep 17 2001, 07:20pm what about a c4 or c3 is that a direct replacement of the a4ld? or is it worse (which i heard) so the ranger is gonna be my toy for the future gonna do couple mods (seen $450 engine kit from northern) gonna do that in the future prolly because a 5.0 swap is prolly unreasonable for me alot more work i thought about it alot and i cant decide what to do i like the milage of the 2.9 (when it works right) but the 5.0 gets something like 15-20 mpg right anyways gime your thoughts
1. keep engine and put new stuff in it
2. swap a 5.0 engine and trans in
3. 4.0?? possible dunno
i want a gas efficient vehicle but want power to play also its a 2wd

i might be talking nonsense this is just the stuff that runs through my head when i get frustrated lol
Ken00 Sep 18 2001, 09:01am Like I said before I'm not sure about swaps but the C-3 would not have the OD and I don't know about the fit. A properly rebuilt A4LD with a new or clean converter should last. You should read Fordman's page about the A4LD rebuilding. I would add a cooler if you don't have one, heat kills these things, put it in line before the radiator one. The 5.0 swap can be done but it is a lot of work, the 4.0 is easier since it bolts up to the tranny and you just need electronics. If your 2.9 is in good shape and you don't have any head problems why spend the money right now. You can always add the 4.0 auto explorer radiator and 180' stat if you want to make sure it stays cool. I see you got in touch with AllanD, he can be a big help if you work with him and communicate well too. Good luck.
jdimassi Sep 18 2001, 04:32pm yea for some reason everyones been very helpful to me and i could never repay that to all of you currently my trucks down the garage and there looking into weather its toast or not i think it is reverse is gone, doesnt go more than 25mph , sputting my engine like a putt putt utt, im expecting that stuff to be here in a day or two seeing all thats happened i expect them to be delayed a little and thats ok thanks again guys
