i was going to post the same question. im planning on lifting mine about 3" with spindles, blox, and shackles. i on the other hand of blake, have a 4.0l. i have stock 3.55 .... what should i want to run? my gas sucks anyway cause of the motor and i drive just as much as he does, maybe less. gas is currently $1.65/gal for the cheap stuff ...

4.10 would be pretty good i wouldnt want to go any lower than that w/ a 4.0

would it be easier to get the rear-end out of a wrecked truck with 4.10's? or where can i buy just the gears?

Well Ive just gotta jump in here. I going with a 2" lift and 265/75r16's on a 92 ext cab 2wd, w/a 2.3l and 5spd trans.I think I aswell will need 4.10's am I right on this? Ive already got a 7.5 rear w/pos lock and 4.10's and it would be great to just swap out the hole rear.

yeah it would be easier to swap rear ends w/ a 4x4 or if you can find a 2wd one w/ 4.10's. You can buy the gears for around >$200 but you have to get them installed.

GRASSHOPPER i'd just swap out rear ends that would be a really nice setup, 4.10's should be good

what is the year range i can pull a rear-end from for my 99? ive already got the 8.8, so everything just swaps out right? or is there anything else i need to change or re-fab or modify ?!?!

I forgot about the 4.0's having a 8.8, you can get gears from jegs for around $179 the only way i'd swap rear ends is if it had 4.10 gears and a trac loc.

Why would you only run 4.10's with the 4.0? 4.56 is a much better match with 33's.

4.10's will be alot better for the street/highway use and mpg

I don't buy that. With 4.10's, you'd be running 2480 at 75 in 5th, with 4.56 you'd still only be running 2750. If there's any difference at all, it would barely be measurable, but you'd pick up an extra 10% in torque off the line as a tradeoff.

I have 4.10's and would not have it any other way for a 4.0L with 33's. The ratio is close to stock, my tranny loves me, and my RPM's are perfect at freeway speed. I see no benefit to run 4.56

I kind of scrolled to the bottom, but the original poster has a 2.3L and is wanting to run 33's. In that case, I do see the need for 4.56s.

My 3.0L, 33s, and 4.10s treat me just fine. No sense in regearing to 4.56 for so little gain.

I was talking to the 4.0 comment... yes with a 2.3 you want to run 4.56

4.56 woudl probally net better gas mileage,a s it puts the tires actual speed in check with the pwoerband of the engine. dont forget 4.10 is a stock gearing and gets very good milage with it, wiht bigger tires you hence add deeper gearing.

McDerry, FWIW I don't think it was ever a factory gearing with a 4.0OHV, and with the SOHC (torque peak is ~800rpm higher) it's only been stock gearing with 31's.

That being said, I still think 4.56 is the best option. :drunk:

Fastpakr;

Shawn said that strength issues with 5.13 gears would be negligible, and shouldn't be a problem. He is planning on running 5.13s/D35/31T8.8 and 35s on a B2 if he can find one for the right price. So I think its a go :)

Sounds good. My 2.8's going to be pretty high strung so I'll be gunning for all the gear I can get under it. That may mean both 5.13's (with 33's for now and possibly 35/36 down the road a bit) and a t/c doubler. I look forward to hearing what you think of your experience. By the way, what's your 8" suspension from - Superlift?

Skyjacker. My friend bought me (randomly) 2" coil spacers but I don't think I'll be using them. If I put the 6" coils under the 2.3L, I know I'll get a solid 6" from them.

I plan on running the LOWEST gear I can find, and down the road I'll be buying an Atlas 4.3:1. I considered a gear driven T-Case with a reduction, but it's not worth it. I've never broken the chain driven, so why upgrade unless I have to?

I also plan on running 33s, MAYBE 35s, so I'll be really crawling with 5.13s ;)

Have you taken a look at the doubler that Tom Campbell builds? It's a modified BW case in front of your stock unit, sort of like a Klune. The Danger Ranger has been running one between a 4.0 and his stock case with 42" tires for quite a while now with no problems. The unit's only like $700 bucks and gives you both more range options than an Atlas and a lower low - 2.48 and double low of 6.13 to the Atlas's 4.3 only (not that the Atlas is a bad product).

I'll have to take a look at that. $700 is a lot more appealing than $2500.

Well Im jumpin in on this quesiton too...I got a 93 3.0 4x4 and I have 32's with what ever my stock gearing is 3.55 or 3.73 somthin like that, anyway I was wondering what all I need to do to regear and what gears i would need?
