Does anyone know if an edge suspension can be installed on the earlier model trucks, 98 and up? Refering to coils, shocks, and a-arms.

EDGE's do not use coil springs and you can not swap them unless you change the frame

You don't need to modify the frame, but who would want to go from a coil-sprung truck to one with torsion bars??

There really is no performance difference. And yes you would need to modify the frame... the EDGE/4x4 models have a straight frame to clear the shocks, CV's (on 4x4) etc, and the 2wd has the coilbucket molded into the frame (huge bulge)... you are looking at about 2500 dollars in frame work alone. Why do you want to change?

Just spoke to someone at the dealer today, told me that the only differences are the upper and lower control arms, lowers $140 a piece, uppers $150 a piece. Will do more research because if it's possible I am junking the uppers I have now and going back to stock, Edge stock that is!

yes, becasue Edges have torsion(?) bars not control arms.

But the same year's XLT and XL models have control arms so try that one

website to the ford ranger brochure, click on suspension and handling, says it's not a torsion bar setup and I just got off the phone with another dealer, they told me the same.

Edges do, infact, have torsion bars. There are many Edge owners on this forum ... I know they all have torsion bars.

Especially since you hear some of them whine because they have problems dropping theirs :E

the frame is different from a coil spring truck to a torsion bar truck!!!!!

ALL edge's are torsion bar 4x4 and 4x2!

you CAN NOT swap suspensions unless you swap the ENTIRE frame!

most ford parts guys have no clue as to what there talking about.

both use upper and lower controll arms BUT they are both different

why would you lower an EDGE ?

thats why you buy the EDGE in the first place , it has a higher stance then the XL or XLT 4x2

04 edge, couldn't agree with you more

I still have to see the 2wd drive trucks myself, I can't be convinced that Ford would use a different frame for the 4wd trucks, it would just cost to much in production to have two different chassis manufacture for the same vehicle.

There is a lot of misinformation in this post... here's the facts...
The frame IS different between a 4x4/Edge frame and a Coilsprung 2wd... the dealers you talked to are morons, and you can NOT put an edge suspension on your truck unless you swap frames and/or modify yours for thousands and thousands of dollars.

Yes Edge's have Torsion bars

Torsion bars do NOT eliminate control arms. A torsion bar is a type of spring, hence, it replaces a COIL type of spring on the 4x4/Edge models, not the arms... although the arms on a 2wd coilsprung truck are different than a 4x4/Edge....

Got it now?

my 2x4 edge has the same frame as the 4x4, all the front axle mounting points are there , just no axle!
it sits up just like a 4x4 , maybe higher do to the less weight (no axle)
this is why i bought it , and ONLY why i bought it, i wanted a factory 2x4 "pre-runner" plus i like the painted wheel well flares and color keyed bumpers and the new hood grill combo looks nice also!

seriously, why anyone would want to lower there 2x4 EDGE is way beond me ?

might be your reason to buy an Edge, but others might like the look of it slammed. Why else would people do front end swaps to make theirs look like an edge and then lower it? Even Thunder02 has a front end. And i have seen lowered Edges and accouple Bagged edges, and they dont look bad at all.

Heres another good reason, because its DIFFERENT, HARD, CHALLENGING, and down right COOL.

If you must ask why lower an EDGE, you might want to add, why lower a truck to begin with

just my 2cents
