Hello everyone, well i finally got my girlfriend talked into getting an explorer. We got a 95 Explorer Limited last week. Anyways it is great condition, except for a few things..... Oh yah an it has a 4.0.

Ok, problem One:

Temp gage on dash only moves a tiny bit...never above the bottom line, i have come to the conclusion after talking with may people that it is either the t-stat or the senser....

Problem Two:

she has 2wd, 4wd Auto Hi, and 4wd Low....Hi Auto works fine, we have all under body fluids changed and still 4 low does not engadge.....I talked to ford and the guy said if she is never going to use it it is not worth getting fixed, and i agree...what could it be? it clicks in dash then spits some error code at me...

Problem Three:

I have no told her about this yet....But when i was farting aroud with it the other day and i was seeing the difference in acceleration from my 3.0 Ranger, i floored it a about 30 MPH and she got up and started going....but all of a sudden the battery light started to flicker.....when i stoped flooring it it went off.....Is this a bad alternator??? God i hope not! lol...

Problem Four! Sorry one more!

Ok, the thing has a rebuilt tranny....rebuilt at 116,000 now has 128,000. it seems to shift vary strange comparied to my truck, it shifts very tightly almost a jerk some times, but not as smooth as my ranger....is that just that its a differenct tranny and all what what not...and also we have noticed that sometimes when accelerating from a dead stop and normal acceleration, then if we hit the gas a little more it will rev up then shift then rev up and shft back into the original gear.....

So what do you guys think about her? the inside is spotless....outside is really nice, and the Limited is a kick ass package....all for $5,400. Thanks for reading!

1) If you have good heat coming from the heater than it is the sender and not the t-stat.

2) Most likely the shift motor on the t-case. Yes you could keep from getting it fixed but more than likely it will eventually fail for 4hi also. Best bet is to shift it into 4wd at least once a week to keep the motor moving in all it's positions. If you are mechanically inclined you can follow the directions at therangerstation.com for servicing the shift motor.
Also have you properly tried to engage 4low? I believe with an automatic you need to have the transmission in park (or maybe N) and your foot firmly on the brake.

3) To check your alternator, get the vehicle running and the disconnect the battery - if it stalls out the alternator is shot.

4) Don't know what to tell you about the tranny.

When the transmission was rebuilt they probably adjusted it that way on purpose. The jerk is a faster shift less wear on the transmission.
4low you have to be Stopped in neutral with foot on brake.
Being a 95 I would bet your thermostat needs replaced.
To check the alternator, most autozone and similar parts places will wheel a machine out to the parking lot and test for free.
The rpms going up and down is the torque converter locking and unlocking.

My 97 4.0, virtually the same setup, has the same problem you have described with the temp guage. Mine is the sensor, so as greens keeper said, if you have heat coming out, then it prob. the sensor.

Actually, the sender/gauge/sensor for the temp probably works fine. It's not very accurate, to say the least. Trust me on that. My truck gauge gets 1/2-way between the left slashes when the t-stat opens up.

i wouldnt recommend disconnecting the battery with it running, that worked fine on older non-computer controlled vehicles but can be bad for a newer one. jmho.
