whats up fellas, and ladies...i just bought my first ranger..'01 xlt reg cab 2.3...i was just wondering if all 01 and up 2.3's are duratec's or they are just a 2.3...i will have many more questions as i start to work on it i'm sure, but for now an answer to this will help being that i have never worked on or with a ranger before...thanks....

An 01 2.3 would be a duratec, if it was a 2.5 then it would be the old Lima engine.

They're pretty easy to differentiate by looking at, first off is the number of cams, the Dtec has 2 so the head and valve cover are obviously going to be significantly wider (not to mention it will also have two cam gears) whereas the Lima is a SOHC so it's only about 5 inches across the valve cover (and a single cam gear)

thanks for the info...i pick the truck up on saturday so i will look at the head and valve cover...i looked at it last weekend and saw 2.3 on top of the head....so i was guessing it was a dtec

Well, it's definitely a duratec then, unless someone swapped on an old 2.3T aluminum valve cover, which that case it would say 2.3 Turbo.

Now open up the airbox, or add an intake, and enjoy that screaming 4 cylinder fury under the hood.
