View Full Version : Tranny stuck in fourth gear...

OK...have had a problem with this ****box transmission for quite some time now. One of the locator pins* for the shifter is missing (worked its way out of the case some time ago) and I've been able to rotate the shift handle about 90 degrees or so. Didn't have much of an effect on shifting, though.

Last night, going home and noticed that the shifter could almost be spun completely around while in neutral, less so when in gear. Then I discovered I couldn't get the thing out of fourth gear (ever try to take off from a dead stop in fourth?).

Anyone have any suggestions before I put a bullet in this thing? I already know I need a new shifter assy (the bottom is trashed after 284,000 miles of powershifting) and one of those pins, but is there anything else I can do to the tranny to at least get it into neutral? The tranny itself is only about 125,000 miles old and has been OK except for this problem with the shifter. I haven't had the shifter off yet, so it could very well be something simple.

*When you remove the shifter assembly from the tranny, there's two steel pins that the shifter pivots on. One of those is gone.

Actually, my truck goes in fourth with very little problem, and a slight feathering of the clutch...
Anyways...Sounds to me like the linkage may have come undone...But, I dont know for sure...

i had a mustang that got stuck in 3rd gear! sucked big time! anyhow the synchronizers where worn out. that might be the problem.

more than likely you welded forth to the main shaft this could happen from low tranny fluid or it could be the synchro the way to check is turn off the truck and see if you can pull it out off forth and put it into another gear and then try to take off if it dies then it isn't he synchro it is the gear its self i think i could be wrong but i would check it out

OK, I got that part worked out. Yanked the shifter, started poking and prodding, replaced the shifter and got it into neutral. Not entirely sure what I did, but it appears to be working now. Now I'm on a search for a new shifter assembly. I think the excess play in the current one allowed one or more of the shift forks to get pushed someplace it didn't belong.

Jw, I had the same prob last year! I sheared one of the pins off too, and I got stuck in second! The levers inside the casing got shifted when it rotated on me, so I pulled the shift assy., got a long screwdriver, and straightened it out inside. I yanked a shifter out of another truck (a wrecked repo) and no probs since!
I have no idea what a junkyard charges for an assy., I imagine the dealership would ask a good amount though!
P.S. I have the dealer parts list and diagram for the tranny, if ya want it, email me and I will scan it and get it to ya!

Yep, sounds like your shift rod jumped out of the shift forks while your transmission was in fourth. It's pretty difficult for the tranny to be in two gears at once.

I should have a shifter out of my old 94 3.0 that you can have for shipping if you want. I'l have to double check my friends garage tonight to see if I can find it.

Wayne - yep, that's what I had to do also.

Wed - Lemme know ASAP on that shifter. What else is with it (boot, knob, etc.)?
