I just bought an '88 4x4 that had the trans out and needed to be rebuilt, so I couldn't start it/test drive it. I fixed the trans and hooked everything up and fired it up. It started excellent for sitting for so long so that was kind of nice. My problem is it idles high(1100RPM) and then it will slow down and start chugging, then slowly go back to high idle. I checked the timing and it was off(about 10 degrees), but some of that could be from it idling so high. I gave it a full tune-up/oil change before I started it. How do I read codes if I can? I have a Chilton's manual which is just enough to get you in trouble! Any ideas of some things I could look at? Thanks in advance

For the idle problem clean the Idle Air Control valve (IAC), seperate the solinoid from the valve, clean the valve. Then with the IAC disconnected set the base idle speed, with the truck warmed up, by using the screw on the TB to 700-800 auto, 900-1000 manual, then plug the IAC back in. If it's still a not right try resetting the computer by disconnecting the negitive battery cable for 15 minutes. For timing you need to disconnect the spout connector, just in case you didn't know. It's easy to pull the codes, you can get a scanner or use the check engine light, the connectors are under the hood on the passengers side , one is an odd shape. If you need more help about the KOEO, KOER and comtinuous codes let me know. You can email me at RACSAN99X@aol.com if I don't get back to you.
