View Full Version : back again!
gumby Nov 17 2001, 09:11am ok, to clear things up, i posted that i am gonna be using a 85 XR7 as a donor car, with a 2.3T/T5. and got a response about a merkur with a T9.
the 85 mercury cougar XR7 is the sister car tro the 85 TC. anyhting that applies to the TC will to the XR7.
so, custom clutch line from ranger master cylinder to XR7 slave, or XR7 master in the ranger? will the XR7 master bolt up in the ranger?
i am removin a TK5 which has an internal slave, and an internally leakin master at the moment.
Rascal, how did the shifter hole in the floorboard line up when you went from the TK4 to the M5?

Frdmerk Nov 17 2001, 11:27am I not sure what tranny an M5 is but if it is the same size as a T5,the shifter will almost touch the seat. i'm still useing the stock 60/40 and all i did was turn the shifter handle around and it clears by 2".(stock 5.0 shifter handle)
I think I had to cut back 5-6" from the factoryhole in the floor.

gumby Nov 17 2001, 12:42pm the 86 has a full bench in it. but the seats are in the XR7 if i need them.
your truck is a '92. so you removed a M5 to put in the T5, correct? how is the 5.0 shifter handle as far as comfortable reach while driving?
gumby
Frdmerk Nov 17 2001, 02:52pm no my truck was an automatic with a 3.0 V6. I love the way the shifter feels when I drive it . It doesn't feel like a truck, it feels like shifting a car. It's not hard to reach at all, you don't have to stretch your arm or anything. The best thing is that it is a really short shift.

gumby Nov 17 2001, 03:41pm ok, so you had a floorshift auto. duh.
that is another reason i decided to go with the T5: the shift quality.:)
since you dont have to stretch or anything, i guess i may be able to use the stock shifter from the XR7 also. and which ever seat clears, the bench or the buckets from the XR7.
now all i gots to do is figure out what i am gonna do with the clutch.........back to original topic.........lol

Frdmerk Nov 17 2001, 03:55pm I don't know if this helps but i'll post anyways. I used a 2.3 mustang bell houseing, a TC flywheel and clutch and a 5.0 T5 trans. to make the input shaft work with my crank I drilled the crank to fit a 5.0 pilot bearing. For the slave cylinder I used one from an f-150 an d made a bracket so it pushs on the arm that comes out of the bellhousing. I did that because the mustang is a cable set up and I had to use a hydraulic.

The Rascal King Nov 17 2001, 07:29pm I'm sorry Gumby, that's not the first time I've seen XR7 and read XR4Ti...gotta be more careful about that.
You're right, the XR7 followed the TC...and being 85, that means a cable clutch. They didn't go hydraulic until 87.
Is the slave on the TK5 an external pusher? The one on my TK4 was, and if it is, you may be able to use that setup on an 87/88 TC bell. If not, you should be able to use at least the Ranger master, and I'd be a little surprised if it won't mate right up to a TC slave...
gumby Nov 19 2001, 08:07am nope my TK5 has an internal slave.
that T5 being cable sux. has anyone converted a ranger to cable operation?
or should i jus find the stuff to make it work like Frdmerk did?
gumby
The Rascal King Nov 19 2001, 10:33am I've still got the external slave setup from my 83 if you want it, I'll send it to you for cost of shipping if you're interested. The only reason I took it out was to go to internal for the M5.
You wouldn't be the first to convert a Ranger to cable, but it's a step backward in my opinion. :) I don't know of any kits to do it either - which is not to say they don't exist of course, but...
gumby Nov 19 2001, 04:16pm i dont know if i would consider a cable a step backward so much. there are many high performance applications still using a cable. your cobra for an example.
it is however a valid option, and that is what i am considering at the moment. all my options.
and on that note, if you are willing to part with the hydraulic set-up you have, it would be a great help to have the parts in front of me. that way i can really see what would be involved as far as installation, cost, and effectiveness.
i will PM you with more info, when i get some more things finalized.
thanks for the help!:)

joebltzfk Nov 19 2001, 05:49pm For what its worth, I have an 86 Ranger with a 88 TC engine/trans.
The tc clutch slave is external. The line is held in place with a roll pin. Remove the roll pin, slide in the line from the original Ranger master, replace the roll pin, and you have an operational clutch.
gumby Nov 20 2001, 08:08am which tranny did you replace? TK5, TK4, other?
gumby
joebltzfk Nov 20 2001, 09:59pm I am not familiar with TK designations. The trans was the original that came in the truck. Slave was internal.
