I have a '91 Ranger with the cargo light over the rear window. I have never used it in the time I've had this truck, and I'm wondering if I can convert it to a 3rd brake light. Namely what I need to know is how would I paint the clear lens red and still have it see-through, and how would I wire the light in to the brake lights? Any ideas? thoughts? comments? Any help is appreciated.

I did it and just put a red bulb in it until my dad finds the paint
All you have to do is make a 'T' in the rear lights herness and cut into the cargo wire, so instead of going to the interior lights it goes to the brake lights:drunk:

Im kinda doing the same thing, except Im completely removing the cargo light, adn then Im gonna put in an LED third brake light.

Well, I understand you have to splice in to the brake lights, but what I need to know is *where*. Where does the wire go that comes out of the cargo light? And where would I splice it in to the brake light wire?

Pull the brake light ou and find what the color code on it is. You can then look at the big pack of wires that runs on the side of the drivers seat and you can splice it there. For the break you can try the same thing, but I am not sure if the break wires run past the drives seat or under the truck?

i have a 3rd brake light that im waiting tobe ut in also! This is what ive been thinkin of doing:

The rear brake light wirings go under the truck on the side of the frame rail (?ithink) so splice into there somwhere under the cab area then pull it up through the holes in the cab floor in the extcab area a little in front of the drivers rear seat. (when you take your carpet out theres a rubber cork/bushing that covers up a hole). Run the splice throug the hole under the carpet, behind the mouldings and all the way up to the light.

Nowi just gotta drill someholes and chomp out some peices of sheetmetal above my window... (i got the red and clear brake light) Does anyone have or can take a pic of their brake light taken off their cab?

i never used my cargo light either, SO I SHAVED IT!!!!! :nuts:

I used red "anodized" paint to paint the amber turn signal portion of the 99 tails I put on mine. I remember Derek used some sort of model paint to paint the turn signal red on his '94.

On my '83, I was thinking about putting the 3rd brakelight from my '93 since its been shaved....

Ojkay, the brake wires go under the truck by the frame so you will have to look under there for them, just make sure you have the brake light not the back up light. I couldne find where the cargo light wire came out and then i figured it is just fused to the interior light. So...You have to do a bit of customization to wire it up to the actual wire. Then, just run the wire behind your moulding/hedliner and there you have it! A third brake light, i used model paint BTW

I rewired my cargo lights to light up as brake lights and it was easy as hell. no splicing at all. When you disconnect the connector inside the light, theres this little pin inside the connector that allows you to pull the wires out. All you gotta do is take 3 wires and put em in the brake plug on the connector, put the whole thing back together and it's done.

Just make sure you have the right one, i wired it backwards the first time and instead of having a 3rd brake light everytime i hit the brakes my dome light would come on. :daze:
