Ok gang. I just got my new toy. It's an 84 Ranger 4wd with 48,000 miles on it. (Yes, I am sure it's only 48,000.) :) I'm planning on shoveling in a 5.0 and AOD I have laying around. I want to use it as a hauler for my car. I want to up the gearing though, since I am going to use an AOD. (I am going to switch it over to a 8.8 Rear end.) My question is what to do with the front gears then. Can I gt a tall front gear for the front axle? (Like a 4.10?) I don't want to mismatch the gears front and rear. Any help would be much appreciated.

Wow, only 48K on an 84? That's a great find! You can swap to 4.10 gears front and rear. I know the 89-97 TTB 4x4 Rangers used the Dana 35 front axle, and I'm pretty sure the 83-88's did as well, but not positive. Like you said, you don't want to mismatch the gears, or you will be breaking stuff the first time you use the 4WD. Check out www.offroadrangers.com , it's primarily for offroad Rangers and you're likely to get better 4WD answers there.
