I hate to do it, but I am going to the dealer to get some rotors and drums for my 93 4x4. Two problems so far, I have to give the parts guy the front axle sticker number. He will decode this and be able to tell me what size front rotors I need. Not a big deal. Second, I need to know the rear drum size. Not a big deal but a pain. I have to pull the wheel and drum. It would be nice to have the parts when I pull the wheel and drum!! Is there any other way, short of measuring the drum to know if it is the 9" or 10" drums?

Dealer reason: I know the parts guy!

Thanks in advance,
Jeffery

I think the rear drums are 9in, but don't count on it. Also the axel # Is that the same # that is ont he differential tag? that pretty easy to get to. At least I bumped this post up to the top maybe someone else will know.

4X4's usually have 10" drums, but yours may be an exception. Not much of a way to know without measuring them.
And who cares if you know the parts guy... Unless he likes you a lot and plans on giving you a hell of a discount, you are going to get severely ripped off. God I hate dealers. They think genuine Ford parts are pure gold. Any reputable parts store should be able to decode the axle number. A rear drum that cost me $50 at the parts store would have cost me $150 at the dealer....

well, i agree somewhat with what you say about dealers. But i feel that the local garages around here are incompetent most of the time. The dealers have the skill, working on fewer models of cars, and mostly the same manufacuter, knowing common problems, and being able to fix things quicker, as well as having more parts on hand. Larger dealers i will never go to, but here at college (platteville,Wi) there is a small dealer here. their rate is only like $45 an hour, and back home, the local shop is $55, and the gm dealer is $65. I have had my whole front end gone over on my 80 f-150 4x4, ball joints, ujoints, bearings, hubs, a tierod end - all for like $750. All other places wanted at least a $1000.
