View Full Version : 2.3 turbo'ed duratech
ibismojo Oct 05 2004, 11:11pm anyone know if the 2.3l used in the Mazda 6 is the same engine as the 2.3 found in the new focus's, escapes, and rangers?
if so, mazda just announced a 2.3l turbo'ed Mazdaspeed 6 supposedly putting down 255hp through an AWD drivetrain.
Lone_Ranger01 Oct 05 2004, 11:12pm I'm pretty sure the engine is the same...
Aaron B Oct 06 2004, 06:32am Well, same shortblock anyway, I believe things start changing in the head though. They may be using a form of variable valve timing and I know for certain that they use a form of variable intake runners. Basically, you could swap, but you'd have to deal with some engine management issues or figure out a way to make the entire Mazda 6 setup fit in your engine bay longitudenaly.
This isn't the first vehicle to recieve a turbo'd version of the new 2.3. The European Focus RS already get's a turbo'd version. I can't remember for sure if is available with AWD though, but it is the basis for the Fords run by the likes of Markko Martin in the WRC.

yeah, those WRC cars are pimp ****, listening to them chirp as they scream by on the tv is sweet,.... why is it that the foriegn countries get the turbo'd cars first? if its an emissions thing i thought that a turbo system actually helpes with emmisions?

Not when its boosting, then its emissions get bad.
Lone_Ranger01 Oct 06 2004, 01:02pm Instead of swapping the whole engine...couldn't you just swap the pistons, rods, heads, turbo, manifold, and the computer out?

to do that your pretty much gonna have to pull the engine to get to the bottom end, so since your already gonna have it out then what is the point in not swappin engines?
Bulldog559 Oct 06 2004, 10:07pm Turbo on the 2.3L Duratec? Good thing I'm broke :E

Well...if the mazda6 2.3 is a front wheel drive engine...won't it have totally different spots for the engine mounts?

Yes it will and it will have manifolds that you couldnt use because they are setup for a FWD setup. Not to mention that the computer might be vastly different and a proper OBD 2 swap requires that all OBD 2 functions be maintained.
Lone_Ranger01 Oct 07 2004, 01:09am Well...instead of a computer swap...couldn't you just get you ECM flashed or get a chip.

maybe....if the engine uses the same wiring harness and some company makes an aftermarket upgrade chip.

yes, but if it is truly the same block then the castings should still be there for your engine mounts, it wouldnt make since to spend thousands on a block redesign just to change holes for engine mounts, so they probly cast the block with both sets of holes for engine mounts,... possibly anyways

true, but you can find the material and parts to have custom manifolds made, in fact Gay-Briel on here found a aftermarket do it yourself custom turbo manifold for the Duratech's,... they are out there
turboparton Oct 07 2004, 03:29pm One thing to think about is that Mazda plans to use direct injection on the 2.3 turbo. So the head design should be different. How different who knows...
It would be excellent if they used a standard Ford computer system so that you could interchange it with the ranger one, but that's really iffy.
