Ok I'm lookin at trading in my 98 for a new Ranger this spring, and am lookin at a standard cab with 5 speed and the 2.3 Duratec.

What kind of 1/4 mile times have you guys been pulling with them. And what is out there for performance parts? I'd like to be able to at least keep the same kind of performance level as I have with my current 4.0L but with better MPG. So if it can turn low 17's or high 16's in the 1/4 then thats perfect. If not ah well.

Thanks for any info guys.

Same performance as a 4.0l with 1.7l less displacement and two less cylinders? Only way that's gonna happen is with boost or nitrous. I never ran mine at the track but did find this 1/4 mile timeslip (http://www.dragtimes.com/Ford-Ranger-Timeslip-3461.html). No details given though.

As far as parts go, there are plenty of threads here that already discuss the topic.

Yep..you can get heads, cams, valvetrain, exhaust, header, intake, chip, electric fan....and I'm sure there are a few other things. I'm sure that a turbo kit will come out eventually since the 2.3 is getting so popular.

well, you can get even faster than the 4.0L with a 2.5L, my best slip has been 16.62 s on the 1/4 mile @ 4500 feet above sea level. See the dyno at my web page.

I don't know about the new 2.3L, but tdon't think there is a,lot of stufff around for it, but with nitrous "one kit fits all", hahahaha. My current MPG is the same than my wife's car (not for long, she is going turbo and nitrous, hehehe), it's a VW Jetta 2.0L 4 cilinder, manual transmission.

the 2.3 has been popular for many years, just not in a ranger n/a situation.

Thanks for the replies guys. I know turbos and nitrous are always options, but considering this is a daily driver it will never see either of those. Fund just aren't available either for the mod or to replace a motor when things turn bad.

If its that hard to get the new 2.3L DOHC into the low 17's N/A then I'll just get myself a new 4.0L and call it a day.

I should be good for low-to-mid 15s on my 03 2.3 (if I take all the junk out of the back, that is) ...Thats with just intake and exhaust (and some minor electrical tweaking) ...Check out http://www.focaljet.com ...They have a section on Duratec performance; there is a lot of parts out there that can be adapted to the Duratec Rangers...

Oh yeah, I also drive a 2400 pound ZX3...

i dunno about the 2.3, but on minimal bolt ons, i am running 15.6's with a race weight of 3810lbs without me in it.....

i was going to say, how does that work, a focus isnt the same setup as a ranger, so they have lower quarter mile time stock

Money is there for a newer truck not brand new, as in steppin up from my 98 to an 02. And money is there for light mods, but seeing as this is a daily driver I'm not gonna throw a ton of money at it, thats what I've got a bike for. Not to mention the fact that I pay twice the price for parts here in Canada as those of you in the US.

If anything more then exhaust, e-fan and intake on a 2.3 DOHC can't perform along side my current 4.0, then the new SOHC 4.0 will be my ticket.

Thanks again for all the replies.
