View Full Version : Fuel mileage...

OK folks, here it is...
First off, make sure you are computing it right. If you are going off your gas gauge, you are WAY off. The factory gauge is non-linear (1/2 isn't half) and can't be trusted anymore than the oil pressure gauge. You have to top off (I use the "three clicks" method discouraged at the pumps :E ) and record your mileage to the 10th. The trip has to be BOTH ways (to be sure it's not all down hill, with a tail wind!) and refill your near empty tank, again with the "three clicks". Then, divide the miles by the fuel used:
320 miles / 15.2 gallons = 21.05 MPG

Sounds simple, but you would be AMAZED at how many people screw it up! :dazed:

Now, some things to think about:

-Never tell people how many miles you get per tank. Rangers had at least 3 different tank STYLES and just as many different sizes. The numbers never equal out.

-Calibrate your speedo or at least figure out its error. All Ford speedo's are fast by 1-2.5% without fail (except the police Crown Vic's :) ). You can have it done professionally at a shop, or "shade tree" by driving 5-10 miles in an area with mile markers. While not the best way, it can be VERY accurate on a 100 mile leg or by comparing with GPS! Use that correction factor in your math:
270 miles / 15.2 gallons = 17.76MPG
But, your speedo is .5 miles short on a 5 mile trip = 10% slow, so it was actually 297 miles (270 + 10%) on 15.2 gallons for 19.53 (corrected) MPG.

-If you changed your tire size from what is on the door sticker and your differential gears as well, you NEED to do this for sure!

-Always get your gas early in the morning from the same station and the same pump for your before and afters. This eliminates error and makes sure you are getting the fuel before it expands in the tanks when the sun rises.

So, take the poll, be sure to hit the correct buttons for Stick/Auto and 2WD/4WD!

MPG Tips:
Make sure your vehicle is tuned up. Faulty plug wires, dirty plugs (cap and rotor for the pre-'95's), old O2 sensors, dirty injectors all hurt your mileage. Keeping your vehicle in a good state of tune lowers the operating costs and lowers emissions!

Keep your tires inflated to the proper pressure. Going higher reduces rolling resistance for better mileage, but also increases the risk of rollover, improper tread wear and rough ride.

NEVER put anything on your roof.

Leave the tailgate UP, get a tonneau or a hard bed cover. Don't fall victim to the myths about "lowering wind resistance" by removing your tailgate or replacing it with an aerodynamic mesh. Do your homework, its all lies.

Here is a great article on "Fuel Saving Devices (http://www.popularmechanics.com/automotive/auto_technology/1802932.html?page=1&c=y)", most all were scams. I have used the magnets, and did see an major reduction in emissions, but little else. I would love to see how Acetone would stand up to their testing....

I have a auto 3.0 Edge supercab. I calculate my mileage like you. My best was 24 all hwy. my 2nd best was last week 23.5. overall average is between 22 and 23.I drive 64 miles round trip to work per day. 10 miles hwy, 50 mile on country roads 4 city and I usually get high 22's. I stay under 65 and under unless speed limit sez otherwise.
330.1 miles / 14 gallons =23.5 mpg. I have been on the low side too worst to date was 18mpg driving all over Raleigh NC

well i'm not sure if my speedometer is recalibrated or not cuz the owner before me put on 31 bfg all terrains, but my best mileage with my 3.0 reg. cab 4x4 manual was on a trip from pennstate university to my home. I did the total gallons bought divided by miles driven and I averaged about 23 with a little town driving included. whether it's correct or not, it still impressed me a lot

I seem to average about 18-20 with mostly town and some highway driving.

I get 21.5 MPG hwy and 12.5 city. I live 50miles from a major city, so I use the same pump here in town every time, and the same pump there, every time. This way I dont have to worry about quicky pumps. These numbers are averaged between several types of driving. Some 65mpg, some 80, some 50mile trips, some 112 mile trips. Some are all city, some are all highway trips. I also never let my tank get below half.

I drive about 60 miles/day. 24 miles at ~45mph, 25 miles at ~70-75mph, and the rest is stop/go.

Two weeks ago: 24.4mpg
Last week: 21.95mpg
This week, waiting to see, but hoping for 25+ Judging by the gauge (I can guess pretty close by it), I'm betting 24.5+

Difference- two weeks ago I started paying more attention to not standing on it from a light or stop sign. Last week, fell off that for a day or two...

If I kept it at 65, I think I would pick up more MPG,a nd I also want a tonneau that should help a bit.

Not too bad for the miles on it, and it needs a tune-up. :rocking:

UPDATE/EDIT: Just filled up for the week. 25.375mpg and it still needs a tune-up and tonneaau.. :driving:

I think it hates staying at 65 on the Interstate... the CEL pops on/off :sad2:

out of my 2000 Trailhead 3.0, auto, 2wd, 4.10 gear, 245/75/16.... i get anywhere from 15 to as much as 17. I get better gas mileage if i stay off of the interstate. i think the 4.10 has to do with that. doing almost 3 grand in order to drive down the interstate.... isn't that bad? all you guys get so much better gas mileage. or could it be something with the flex fuel thing. i dont see how it would lower gas mileage. just adjusts ignition timing when there is more ethanol in the fuel....everything is stock with the exception of the "tuner tube" which i understand might lower it like 1 mpg, but something must be wrong here.

I am averaging 18.5-19 mpg in a mix of highway, sorta highway, and some city. Let me explain the sorta part. I live out from the nearest town about ten miles (yes I do go that far to get my mail) with four stoplights between home and the post office where the limit is 55mph. Through the town of Wasilla (P.O.) is a string of about five lights in a three mile stretch where the limit is 45mph. From the last light to the next light in Anchorage is about 35 miles and the limit is a combo of 55 & 65mph limits. Once in the city it is stop and go for another 5 miles or so before I park it. Then I go the reverse route to get home again. I do the limits as much as I can stand it or until I get frustrated with the idiots and lose patience and from then on it is 75+. Only minor mods on truck and have a fiberglass canopy and the usual odds and ends of stuff in the back. Jack tools and such.

'04 Edge 2WD, 3.0ltr/5-speed, K & N Air Filter, Mobil 1 Synthetic Oil. Daily driver, round trip 60 miles combined city-40/highway-20. Stay 55 mph or slower, shift gears earlier than normal, do not race from a stop, do not brake at the last minute, and used cruise control as much as possible, and easily you should be able to pull above 23 mpg. In the easiest terms, drive like your 70 years old. I have 15K on this truck, and my average for every drop of gas put in, is 25.3 mpg, and it is all documented from the first tank put in. This average includes idling in heavy traffic (Hurricane Ivan).

I have a '98 XLT 3.0 5sp 2WD with 83k miles that normaly does 20 (winter) to 22 (3 seasons) mpg. I don't drive it hard and thought I was getting pretty good numbers until reading some of the mpg's you guys are posting. My trips are not city stop and go but are still usually very short with the engine just barely having time to warm up. If I go for a trip on the highway at around 70mph mileage is usually a touch worse... not sure if that is the gearing or what?

2001 Mazda B3000 4x4 reg cab, short bed AUTO with nothing done to it....BEFORE 33's, with 245/75/16s, I would get around 240-260miles a tank on the highway...less with just around town. With the 33s I havent taken it on a long trip yet, but the town driving is right at 200miles...Im pretty sure its a 14gal. tank because its a auto reg cab...pretty sure. Thats about 14mpg....pretty ****ty. Its bone stock too...and very well kept. I worked for mazda for 2years and keep her tip top....39xxx miles.

I have a 98 XLT w/auto [2WD] with a hard bed cover. I travel 80 miles everyday which is a combination of open highway [first half] and bumper to bumper [second half]. I normally get 20 mpg except in the winter when it drops to about 18 - 18 1/2 due letting it warm up. If I only drive on the highway the mpg jumps up to about 25.

BTW: I forgot to mention that this truck has 170,000 miles on it and I have gotten the same MPG since the day I bought it.

I'm of the opinion that they're ( Gas companies, particularly the ones affiliated with G.W. Bush ) putting something in the gas to make it burn faster. Think about it, if they can increase the fuel prices, why not make it burn faster so they make MORE money ? It's a greed game. Why the all of a sudden increase in prices ? Here in CA, we're paying an average of $2.75 per gallon for 87 octane. It really sucks cause we spend all this money on tricking our rides, but you can't go anywhere after that cause gas is too high.

I started out getting about 18 to 19 mpg stock and began doing mods at around 30,000 miles (3.0L engines seem to loosen up around 30k miles). My last tank of gas (same gas station as always) with my usual driving patterns and habits, I got 21.8 mpg. This is combined mileage which amounts to 18 miles of freeway to work and then stop and go surface streets on the return trip. Don't know yet what I'll get if I take a road trip. The K&N induction kit added the most bang-for-the-buck of all the mods, for both performance and fuel economy.

I'm debating on whether anyone will believe the MPG i've gotten my last two fill-ups......

This is a '92 Reg cab, 3.0, 5spd, 3.45 gears, 170k miles. Only mods are a Dynomax cat-back and K&N drop-in. Last week averaged 26.5mpg. Topped back off today and with teh tank all but running over it came out to 28.364

That required driving like I had eggs under my foot and not getting over 55-60. My commute is 26 miles each way, 5 twisty miles, 10 55mph miles, and 11 stop/go through town with some 1-2 mile gaps between lights. Quite proud of the little Ranger. I really need to get a bedcover to see if I can tip over 29. :driving: I don't think 30 can be had though...

OK, so I must be one of the lucky ones, because I was getting about 19 average around town, bone stock. Then I got a DZK UDP, custom intake tube, and cat-back exhaust system.

Hadn't really checked my mileage until the last few weeks. Been writing the numbers down, but just calculated them all today.

I've been getting 20.2/20.3 mpg around town for the past few weeks. Then last week, I put a bottle of Redline injector cleaner in a tank. This week's tank got 21.5 mpg. Apparently the injectors were dirty!!

I've never been a huge fan of bottled injector cleaner claims, and cannot 100% claim all the results were from the cleaner, but I will check mileage the next couple tanks and make sure it wasn't a fluke. (disclaimer: not a scientific study in any way, shape, or form. Findings may have been dreamed or hallucinated :hippy: )

Oh yeah, same gas station pump, same time of day, same octane, same maniac behind the wheel.

My new '05 (3.0, auto, 4.10 edge reg cab) isnt doing too hot on gas. It got 17 the 1st tank (from the dealer, so it wasnt totally full). 19 the next and the last two 16. Of course Ive leveled it and added 31s and didnt correct the tire size until today so Im sure that didnt help...I figure its still actually getting 19 or so. Ive only got 1200 miles on it so its not even totally broken in. I figure it should end up being 20-22 once I finish all the mods and it breaks in. I ran a fuel economy test on it today while I had the computer hooked up at work and it showed to be OK. We'll see.

I used to have an 02 Edge with the 3.0L and then upgraded to an 03 Edge with the 4.0 SOHC. I never got above 19-20 out of the 3.0L with a combination of city ahd hwy. It was a 5 speed too. The 4.0L, terrible gas mileage. I will never own a 4.0L Ford again but I loved its power. There was just no reason that engine should get the terrible mileage I was getting. I even drove like a grandpa and it was a 5 speed too. My dad has a 98 Explorer with the 5.0 V8. It got better gas mileage driving from Dallas to El Paso doing about 80-90 mpg on average. Weeks later I took the 4.0 Ranger on the same route and it got on average 3-4 mpg less than the Explorer and I was only doing 65-70 with the cruise on. I was not impressed with either of the Ford V6's especially the 3.0's power after driving other brands. The new 4 cylinder almosts feels as peppy as the 3.0L I had.

Wow, what some of you get for mileage looks more like what my full size truck gets. As noted above, the best I've ever recorded in my '92 3.0 is a tick over 28. Normally get 22-25.

I also own a '99 F-150 Supercab Lariat with the 4.6 V8, Auto, and 3.55 gears. I can get 20+ on the highway with the cruise at 60-65 and 15-17 around town. The only way it gets below that is if I hang my 4200lb boat out back, then it's 12-14. And this truck is a heavy beast and likely underpowered.

My truck is a 2002 ext cab 3.0l automatic 2WD with 29.0" tall 255/55X18 tires. (Yes I corrected for the tires) When I first got it, my around town milage was 13.5 and about 16-17 on the hi-way, stock 225/70X15" tires. Overall average about 14.5-15.0. Didn't keep really accurate records back then. Over the last 3 years and 40+ thousand miles I've added a hard tonneau cover, lowered the truck, K&N cold air kit, cat back flowmaster exhaust and a Super-Chip tuner set for 87 octane, most of the time. (also able to got to 91 & 93 when I can get it) I've kept accurate records for the last 2100 miles and am now getting, 17 around town, +/- .2 depending on the number of "jackrabbit" starts. Hi-way is up to about 22 or so. Don't do much hi-way driving these days. Best ever was 23.5 on 1 tank. My overall mileage for the 2100 miles is just a tic over 18MPG, 18.082 to be exact. VERY curious about the acetone thing. Have to do a great deal more research before I try it though.

reading all these numbers, I must need a tuneup... bad.. which has been in my plans anyway, just gotta get the money:P I just got my truck about a month ago and the first tank I got I think 13.4(shoulda wrote it down) and that was all town, mostly driving like an old lady, but got on it a couple times, just to be sure the "power" was still there. then I just filled up today and got 12.4 with all town driving, driving like an old lady the whole time, I dont think I stepped on it hard once. havent taken it on the highway yet. but yes.. all in all, I think I need a tuneup.. oh.. I also have almost 195,000 miles(another tank or two and I'll be there).

ok im curious what everyone else here is gettin for mileage on a tank of gas here, cause i think that mine is eatin gas like its goin out of style ....anyway im gettin something like 250 miles to a tank, and the tank holds 16gallons...

so what should i look at to improve the mileage ??

I hear that the using the amount of miles per tank isn't a very accurate way to compute gas mileage. I typically get 21-22 mpg highway and 19-20 city (about 20 highway if I'm driving pretty hard!).

My 05 edge(3.0) auto and 4.10's gets like 17-18 mpg normal driving, that's using the A/C all day. when i don't use it i get like 1 more mpg. I think you should start with a tune up if you haven't done that.

With my K&N and X-Cal 2 I am getting around 24mpg or so. That's with 4.10s which will be 3.73 soon. A good tune up always helps. You could look up your gear ratio and maybe install a lower numerical gear so your RPM won't be as high at highway speed. If your truck is getting up in mileage probably a tune-up will be the key.

well im thinkin i am goin to do that, however, i dont really think its time to do it just yet cause one i think the the owner before me did, but im just goin to assume that he didint... and its only at 45.5k's anyway so it still shouldnt get that bad of mileage even if it needed a tune up .. or atleast i wouldnt think , but thats just me ....

plus i was goin to switch out the plugs anyway to the E3 plugs , i hear they are better , so i figure it cant be worse then what im gettin now..

DON'T use those E3 plugs. They are a waste of money and will make your truck run like ****. If i were you i would just get some autolight platinums.
