View Full Version : question about boostin my 4.0
sthrnlivin Mar 11 2005, 10:11pm Whats up, I am new to this site, and my name is Jeremy, if any one could answer some of my questions it would be grately appriciated. First thing is first, I am ready to start this project asap, I am working with a stock 94 4.0 ranger and shes got about 70,000 miles on her. I want to get in between 300-350 rwh out of this motor with a single turbo set up and as cost friendly as possible. Can i acheave this power with my stock internals safely, what size fuel pump should I run, what size injectors, should I change my fuel lines, will my ecu be suitable to tune for addiquate fuel and ignition, if so where can I get someone to program a chip for my application, what size turbo should I run. These are most of my questions I have wright now, and if any of you fellas have any parts that might work for this project and you are looking to sell theme, I might be interested.Thanx for reading and if you can give me some sugjestions let me know, Jeremy
Mark98XLT Mar 11 2005, 11:20pm I dont know much about what you have to run or anything, but I do know that there has been a couple guys I think who have run a turbo setup or a supercharger on their ohv 4.0's and only reached from 230-270? rwhp. Its really hard to that much power out of a 4.0 ohv to the rear wheels, its not cheap but If you have the money and the want to do it go for it! But there has been a goal on here to reach 300 rwhp out of a 4.0

Simply put, no. With lots of money put into your motor you still might not be able to reach those power goals safely. No one makes an aftermarket crank for the 4.0 and that's going to be your largest problem. If you want that much power and you want it cheap, swap in an 8.
jimehat112 Oct 12 2006, 10:17am I contacted supersixmotorsports about making a 4.oL with 300hp, here is what they had to say.
Jimmy,
The 4.0 SHC compression, hypereutectic pistons, highish compression ratio
make the stock 4.0 SOHC very sensitive to detonation, pre-ignition, etc.
Anything goes wrong in the tuning, fuel quality, operating parameters, etc,
and the pistons will fail catastrophically. Now, theres a lot of people
running superchargers on the cammers, so not everybody has trouble, at least
not right away. The worst experience we've seen is a fellow with a
ProCharged 4.0 Mustang, his ran about 30 minutes, broke 2 pistons and the
block. He ended up needing a new block, and he built a complete engine with
forged pistons, Stage 3 heads, cams, etc.
Heres what I recommend to people in your situation. You know that
superchargers or any power added can be harmful to the engine, if the Ranger
is your daily driver, don't instal a supercharger unless you are willing to
accept the possible consequences. If you accept the possible consequences,
then you are good to go. A supercharger can add much more power than
building the engine will. 300 horsepower with a supercharger is very easy.
We build the bottom end with forged pistons to improve strength, durability
so that superchargers and other power adders can be used with reliability.
Exceeding 300 would be no problem with a built bottom end. Our heads and
cams add power but not as much as a power adder.
contact omar figaroa , he is a rps`r with what you want to know, see if he can help you

I agree with Wed. The 4.0 you have in your 94 is an ohv, not an sohc, so the sohc comments above won't apply. The easiest way to get to 300+ hp would be to swap in a 5.0 V8.
If you do a search, you'll find lots of threads on both the turbo and swap topics, and that should answer a lot of questions.
omar figaroa Oct 13 2006, 05:46am Runing a turbo setup won't be cheap and to reach those Hp numbers will just ad to it.The first thing you have to sacrifice is your A/C unit if you still have it and if you want to install the turbo in the engine bay, there's just no room.About all i have done to my engine is in mi signature, newer adons where 42lbs injectors and 3'' exhaust have some pic in my gallery. In my opinoin the easyest way get a good tunnin is to ditch your stock ecu and go for an aftermarket one.I went with a microtech ecu MT-4 fuel only and msd dis-4 ignition with a rpm activated switch to retard the timing. Also your stock head gaskets won't last 5second under boost so make sure you get a set of copperhead gaskets from flatoutgroup.com you will have to o-ring the heads and block to get a proper sealling.Last week i went to dyno the truck had some issues with the dyno machine but manage to get atleast one good hp reading of 319rwhp at the wheels @14psi of boost the computer didn't show the torque reading so i don't know how much torque it's making right now. Will be back next month on the dyno to get some more tunning and to see if we can sqweeze some more power out of it and to get a dyno sheet to back me up,cause i know there's people that don't belevive until they see it on papers.Any questions let me know.

hyde88 Oct 16 2006, 12:35pm I'm also interested in putting a turbo on my 4.0. Omar, would it be possible to get some closer shots of the exhaust manifold that the turbo is running off of so I can get some kind of idea of how to run the piping.

Hes got the OHV not SOHC.
I agree with Wed you wnat 300 hp cheap v8 is the way to go.
omar figaroa Oct 16 2006, 07:11pm Sure hyde88, if time permits i'll take some pic tomorow.
