Hey guys,
I have a 1990 ext. cab ranger with a 2.9 and a five speed. I need a new motor and I have been wanting to do a 5.0 swap very badly. I also have a 1954 F-100 that is soon to be completed. It is not a trailer queen, but for shows that are farther away I have been thinking about trailering her. Will a v8 ranger be good at towing or should I just sell the ranger and get a fullsize truck? Thanks for the help

I would be willing to bet you would have the power to pull it, but will you have enough breaking power? Hypothetically you could pull/tow it if you had a stock 4 banger. Getting up to speed would be a pain in the but and the motor wouldn't last very long. Stopping power would be your only major concern and tounge weight. You could do this as well as electronic controlled brakes on the trailer then you'd be set.

He's got a good point about breaking. Just the larger tires I have cause me to loose a lot of breaking power, and when ever I tow a load stopping is extremely scary. I'm looking to ungrade to larger rotors in front and disc or larger drums in back.

I have towed several times with my Ranger. No issues what so ever. I use the Uhaul auto transport with the surge brakes (hydraulic on trailer breaks, operated by pressure on toung.
I pulled a 6,000lb total load a few years back, prior to the supercharger and a 5,500lb load last summer with the blower. Both cases no issue with power, although, the supercharged towing was a little more fun (look on peoples eyes when they see a Ranger pulling a car and gaining speed up long hills!)
I have 4:10 gears, which helps. I also use an FX4 Level II axle, as it has stronger (larger diameter) axle tubes. This allows better strength for heavy toung weight.
Long and short, as long as your trailer has good brakes you should be fine to tow the F150.
