well i see a lot of RPSers supercharging their trucks. what about a turbo on a 4.0 OHV? can it be done, does anyone have it done?
(i will ask more questions later. no need to ask a bunch if this job isnt possible)

it can be done you can turbo pretty much anything, but i think alot or the users here choose a supercharger because first off they make a kit for it so its nothing too special. A turbo would be a complete custom set up. Second reason people choose the supercharger over a turbo is because of the lag time you recieve with a turbo

They are two different engines, so its two different kits. Just not sure what company makes a kit for the OHV.

No one currently makes a kit for the OHV anymore. Vortech, Paxton, and BBK all used to make kits for the OHV. Only BBK ever listed a kit for the 99, but all the kits can be made to fit.

wed, why did you pick the vortech supercharger over the other ones? i am getting more and more intersted in supercharging my truck but i don't have that much knowledge of the subject so im kind of in the dark as to where to start. im unsure of what supercharger to buy and if it would be the best for my 4.0 ohv performance wise. what kind of fabricating does it require to make these things fit? im willing to spend the money for the kit and the fabricating and stuff just dont' know where to start

If you go to the top of the screen and click on tech, under 4.0 is advice and instructions for installing a s/c on a 4.0

wed, why did you pick the vortech supercharger over the other ones?
Mainly because it was available and cheap. I got my kit used (if you could call it that, had less than 5000 miles on it), and got a steal of a deal on it. But it was and still is, my kit of choice. One of the pluses of the Vortech kit, is that is uses your engines oil to lubricate the head unit. This means everytime you change the engine's oil, you do the supercharger as well. The Paxton and BBK kits all use a self contained oiling system. Now using the engine's oil also has a downside to it, heat. Since your using engine oil, it's going to be at engine temperature. That means it's going to add some heat to the supercharger, which will add some heat to the air it's supplying to the motor. More heat = less performance That being said, I still choose the Vortech kit because it flows more air than the BBK, or Paxton kits in stock form. You can upgrade the pulley on any of these kits to get even more air forced into the engine as well. All this being said, I think most all of the kits are fairly equal as far as performance. All the dyno graphs I've seen of these kits being installed on stock motors are all fairly close. The vortech kits seem to produce a little more power in stock form than the other kits, but nothing substaincial, maybe 10rwhp or sometimes less.
As far as installation of the Vortech kit on your 97, the only thing you'll need to worry about is the battery. You can either get one that is smaller, or you can relocate it to the bed of the truck. Either option works. But you won't be able to keep the stock sized battery in the stock location with the supercharger. You also won't be able to secure down the center section of the tubing, but that's not really anything to worry about.
