depends on what you are going for, and the 4.0 is a v6


they both involve swapping in a motor

5.0 explorer will be your best bet. from what I hear it's like a "plug and play" deal. but I'll let somebody comment on that. Do some searches on the explorer swap, don't waste your time with a 4.0 swap , it's a lot of work to swap a motor you might swap in a 4.0 and still not be happy with it. The 5.0 will get more power, have more potential, and gas milage with a stock 5.0, as long as you can stay off the gas, will probably be better then the 4.0.
