View Full Version : Exhaust options with AOD
pinellas50 Jun 01 2005, 07:18pm I am having trouble deciding on which route to take with my exhaust. The stock Explorer headers I am running are no match for the TFS heads. The pipes are like half the size of the heads' exhaust ports.
So I am wondering what everyone else with an AOD is using. What will fit past that tranny and require the least amount of hassle? Along with being able to handle the heads?
Opinions wanted.
pinellas50 Jun 02 2005, 10:03am Does anyone know if Kaufmann headers will work with an AOD? The long tube type?
well you know i have the hooker super comps with my aod, miller had them before hand, and he had to modify the collector to clear the shift arm.
Backlash63 Jun 02 2005, 07:56pm it really wasn't that hard to get my tri-y's to fit and they clear the steering shaft by a mile.
pinellas50 Jun 02 2005, 08:13pm I tried the Tri-Y's too. The driver's side fit like a glove. The pass side was FUBAR. The header was all over the bump in the tranny bellhousing that holds the starter. It was contacting there and the header was no where near bolting up to the head.
As baddad457 pointed out, it may have just been the brand of Tri-Y I bought. I don't know. But it would be an expensive venture buying different sets just to see if they work or not.
pinellas50 Jun 05 2005, 09:22pm Backlash....could you email me and tell me how you got your Tri-Y's to work? My email is dkavanagh@tampabay.rr.com And why don't you have PM capability?
Oh yeah, I just started a thread with pics of my AOD. Does that look like yours?
jaybird67k Jun 06 2005, 08:16am I don't know what truck you got but the L&L's fit like a glove along with using their mounts on my '88.

Yeah. I have looked at them. I always poo poo'd the price tag for them. But the aggrevation and expense of trying things that "might" work might not be worth it.
I am thinking, for the price, that mabey the Hooker's are the way to go. But I have been told by some, not Bart obviously, that they won't work with an AOD.
I have also told others that the Tri-Y's won't work with the AOD based upon my experience. Yet some have pulled it off.

Kevin Jun 06 2005, 08:44am Dave, check your email. Sent you some pics that shep 44 had sent to me a while back. Sorry I didn't think of it sooner.

not entirely true about the hookers, almost everybody says they wont. and they really shouldnt. but miller had the collector modified so it would. its 2 cuts, rewelding, no biggie, if you want me to take pics and get measurements dave ill be more than happy to.
pinellas50 Jun 06 2005, 11:29am Your not helping my decision here Bart! Hold off on measurments. It's probably gonna be awhile before I do anything with this anyhow. I'm using my newly acquired ebay money to have Tmoss port my lower intake since the Kaufmann pipes I was lookin at went elswhere.
I'm just probing more at this point I guess.
But it is safe to say that there is no long tube option that will work with an AOD without some degree of modification. I think that is safe to say at this point. Except mabey those Kaufmann's but that is only what I had read somewhere.

this is exactly what i did to pass header except i had to also cut the collectors but not all the way through. and repoint them. so they didn't interfere with the trans pan on my aod.
sorry it took me so long to read this post. i have know idea why my pm's don't work.

That's a good idea. I am starting to think about giving those Tri-Y's another shot. Yeah, I'm not too smart.
I think my die grinder and that starter bulge are gonna become good friends. It was the area where the 2 pipes come to 1 that was hitting that bulge. Looks like I can take 1/4 to 1/2" off that bulge and still be safe. A lot of guys on corral have done it.
I got Kaufmann's to work..Had to notch the flange on the pass side about 1/8 of an inch, cuz it woulda made noise on the pan...other than that, evreything fits sweet...i can get my headers in and out with the motor in, and they work great! I'll be getting some pics of the motor and such in the next day or two, when it get cleaned up...

I trimmed down the area around the starter and took a little metal off of the frame. I have also purchased a set of used Kaufman long tubes from a fellow PRSer--thanks Ranger289. It will be awhile before I redo the exhaust system but at least I am ready for it........I think.
Brandon Miller Jun 24 2005, 11:06am Here's Bart's headers that I used to own. You can see in the first pic where teh header was modified to clear the linkage.
Brandon Miller Jun 24 2005, 11:07am Here's 2 more pics of mine for reference.
pinellas50 Jun 25 2005, 12:02am That's how I envision mine looking. I have read several times that these Kaufmans will clear this tranny without much if any hassle. I hope so.
buckwild ranger Jun 26 2005, 09:07pm Is Kauffmann back in business?
Brandon Miller Jun 26 2005, 09:23pm Is Kauffmann back in business?
