View Full Version : GT 30 intake...
91XCAB Jun 10 2001, 12:20pm I'm glad to see the board is back up. Thanks Jim!! Check this out. It is the intake I have been working on. Finished it up last week. I was inspired by the GT 40 for the 5.0's, and this is what I came up with for my 3.1 'STROKER'.:D
RangerBill Jun 10 2001, 01:09pm Very Nice!!!
SportBound Jun 10 2001, 01:58pm OH GEEEZ your going to have to give me some details!!!! LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE DONE!!!!! And if I may add... it looks great as well!
SportBound outt!!!
91XCAB Jun 10 2001, 02:24pm The TB is a stock 60mm from a 5.0 that I polished inside. The main tube is 2.5" i.d. steel, the tubes are 1.5" i.d., mandrel bent steel, made a pattern from the t.b. and gave to a friend of mine at a machine shop with the gasket to the lower intake and had him make the lower and tb flanges, brought it home and welded it up. Tubes are 7.25" on center line, EQUAL LENGTH, matched to contour of main runner tube. I would love to put it on, but I know for a fact that it would REALLY lean out at upper rpms, so I will prob end up waiting to add my new motor and throw in the new hi-flow fuel pump and hi-flow injectors.
bonyladver2.0 Jun 10 2001, 03:01pm ....damn.....
i tell yo guys we have some of the most talented peeps here.
i wouldnt even know where to start with sumthin like that!
looks great!
love the blue, i am gonna paint my upper blue. any suggestions?
it looks like you powdercoated it?
laterz:eek:
BOSS 3.0 Jun 10 2001, 04:23pm Sweet! But could you pump these out for less than $133 each? That is the real question...
FormatXformaT Jun 10 2001, 04:44pm thats pretty sharp!
I've had a few ideas on how to build one and will start on one soon
I could flowtest that one for you to see how well it does compared to the stock setup because I have access to a flow machine
Boss, what else is available for $133?
Splash 94 Jun 10 2001, 06:14pm I just posted a question about modifying a 3.0 intake to accept a 5.0 TB. Your intake looks Great! Let us know how it works..I know someone that can make a similar setup.
91XCAB Jun 10 2001, 08:02pm Bonylad - The blue is just Krylon True Blue, from a spray can. The secret to any paint job is the prep work.
Boss- I doubt there will be another one of these made. Would definately have to have a jig. I cut each one of the tubes with a hole saw in my drill press- then fit it together and traced around the tubes with marker and ground to match contour of the 2.5" id tube. VERY time consuming.
Jim- where are you located? How much do you think round trip shipping would be? Would you need the tb with it? What would the turnaround time be?
I will probably not get my new engine dropped in until July, over the fourth we will be driving to Dallas to visit family. I haven't even started to reassemble it yet. I have got the rotating assembly balanced though, just need to give everything a good bath before assembly. Hope to start this week. Still need to order my phenolic spacer from the Boss and the roller conversion pedestals from Summit and I will have all the parts......
FormatXformaT Jun 10 2001, 08:19pm where did you have the tubes bent at?
91XCAB Jun 10 2001, 08:27pm I am not sure where they were bent. I "found" them at work, in a box that hasn't been touched in god knows how many years. They started out life as a 6" dia u-bend and I cut them apart at 3", and welded a 3/4" piece onto the three taller ones in order to get my equal equivalent length.;)

2001 Taurus 3.0L composite intake (if we order 10 or more). Can adapt a 60mm new style TB to it.

...one of these!!!!
racenut Jun 10 2001, 09:04pm How about a flow test on the stock 3.0 ranger intake and a 3.0 plastic intake!!!!!???:D
Splash 94 Jun 11 2001, 06:48am Is the 2001 Taurus 3.0L intake a bolt on for the Ranger 3.0? Or is there some mods to make it work.
91XCAB Jun 11 2001, 08:08am You would prob need to have a diff intake tube, as the '01 intake make a 45 deg bend on the end, and the earlier 3.0's come out straight.
Sirnixalot Jun 11 2001, 12:57pm Is it possible to make an intake with two sets of runners like one set is long and slim and the next set is short and fat. And then have a plate like the one in your TB to redirect airflow. Kinda like the Tarus SHO's intake??????????
Here is a crappy pic i made (not very good at describing things)
BOSS 3.0 Jun 11 2001, 03:32pm ...waiting to see if we can do the 2001 Taurus/60mm combo first. Then later, I plan on trying my hand at a similar design to the Mazda 626 setup. Very sweet...
RangerBill Jun 11 2001, 08:27pm
I am having no luck getting a 2001 Taurus intake for an affordable (read--under $160) price! I REALLY want to try this swap! Anyone who can help, PLEASE e-mail me.
Chris963.0 Jun 11 2001, 10:42pm So do you think that you could make alot of those and let us buy them? I would love to open my hood nd see one of those blue intakes sitting on my 3 liter? Will they work with a stock motor, by stock motor I mean no internals done, just like exhaust, air intake, things like that, in other words bolt ons?
I would love to have one,,,
91XCAB Jun 12 2001, 04:04am Sorry, but I am going to have to say, no. I work 60hrs a wk at my regular job. It took me almost 2 wks to make that one piddleing a couple hrs here and there. If I told one guy yes, there would be a flood of orders and it would probably take me two years to complete. Besides, I am just a backyard shop. Would be tough to set up for that kind of production....Would not be very cost effective, either. There are too many other cheaper alternatives.... I posted this pic just to share so everyone could see what is possible if you let your creative juices flow...

:D ...and you see what that got you! :D
RangerToonz Jun 14 2001, 05:40am I like old boy's idea for the secondaries in the intake. That's pretty much what made the SHO the 15 sec 1/4 mile terror that it is. Well, that and a 7k redline and a flat, smooth torque curve. But if that could somehow be done, I think the wimpy lil 3.0 Vulcan would never be the same.

SHO wannabe
Sirnixalot Jun 14 2001, 09:38am Hehe if you to me, ive never been called old be4 (im only 18)and the SHO style intake thing is Boss's idea i just felt like drawing a pic of it. but that would be nice.
Kelly3.0 Jun 14 2001, 06:39pm IM very interested in this 2001 tarus intake as well! I really want one for my truck but i wonder if it would work ok with my 92? hope so! gimmie gimmie:E
SportBound Jul 19 2001, 06:08pm HEY guys, I have been thinking HARD on the GT30 intake that 91xcab has done. Ive been thinking about making one for myself (something simular to his anyways) so I pulled this thread up to get some more info.
I noticed that you guys started talking about the 2001 taurus intake, but stopped. WHY? Does anyone have any information on this? It WOULD be more cost effective to swap the taurus intake instead of making my own.
Thanks for any help/insight/info.

After driving Vulcan Powered Tauruses for Hertz, I can tell you right off that the new Vulcan has about the same power as the old ones. There appears to be a lil more torque than what we got, but I think that's due to driveline losses in the freaked out trannys we got. However, I believe the overall engine is the same....the intake's just kinda dressed up to look prettier than our cruddy aluminum lookin things. Personally, I'd rather have the intake off the duratech. I know that's more high flow...I wonder if it'll work? Or perhaps a SHO intake...::drools::

BOSS 3.0 Jul 20 2001, 07:34am That's easy. The reason we stopped talking about it is the same old reason. We busted our humps to get a good price on the intakes ($133 for 10) and despite all the posts/ranting/raving/sword clatter, not enough people followed through. Just like the 3.0L engines for $175 or the AGR HD Power Steering Pumps for $80. Kinda puts a damper on the hard work and motivation. This intake is beggin' for a BBK 56mm TB (bolt on) or a modified late Mustang TB.
SUPERSIX Jul 20 2001, 08:24am Does the Taurus (composite) intake share the same TB bolt pattren as the stock 3.0L ('98-up)? BOSS- You said you could adapt a "new style" 60mm to it. I'm confused about the "new style". Is the IAC valve located on the intake or the TB on the composite Taurus intake?
