alright....im planning on buying a 2001-02 explorer sport or sporttrac within the next week. now for some reason...no one drives standards anymore i guess..seeing that i havent found one with the 5 speed. Has anyone done an auto to standard trannie swap on their explorer...and if so what did it take and how much did it cost?

I've seen this discussed on several message boards, and the general consensus is that it is not worth it, just keep looking for one, they are out there. I think my biggest mistake is rushing into vehicles, I wish I would have looked around more... and more... before buying.

It would be very hard to do, you need wiring harness, tranny, flywheel, drive shafts if 4x4, GEM module change and program, plus alot of blood/sweat/tears. They are hard to find, mine is the only 2wd 5spd Ive ever seen, and its a 99. But anyways good luck with your search!!

not to mention the interior fabrication needed to make it look like it came with a manual transmission

My one friend did an auto to manual swap on his 94 exploer xlt im not sure what engine he has as im prety new to the ford commmunity after being a long time nissan fan ive converted. but he actully had a donor engine/ trans from a 92 sport . so he took all the necessary equip off that and mated it to his 94. he tryed the ecu from the 92 but it caused only one side of his engine to fire. he went back to the auto ecm and it fires but he has no low end it seems like his tps is messed up. Another friend of mine a ford tech said that the ecm can be reprogramed to work with the manual trans. the total swap took him about a month.
