The Rascal King Jun 11 2001, 06:27am Originally posted by focused Hi again just wanted to know what mods are out there for this motor? chips, exaust, clutch, pulleys, engine mods and the like? First thing to address would be the intake (check out www.kurtzkustoms.com) and the exhaust. Then I'd look into gears...I'm not much of a chip man unless you have an automatic...Pulleys are available, try Racer Walsh...and of course all the usual hot rod tricks. Roadrunner Jun 11 2001, 05:39pm Ther is not too much after market mods for the 2.3, but that just leaves it to you imagination. He is what I recomend from cheapist to most expesive Intake, You can buy one or build one or stel one off another car Exhaust, flomaster 40 or 50 series works well pullies, look at www.racerwalsh.com look on the 3.0 board, they have a good selection of small engine mods some of which work on the 2.3 Computer chip, not really that much hp,on a stick like the king said, a timing adjuting sprocket will do about the same thing Gears, 3.73 or 4.10 new camshaftnew injectors port polish heads & exhaust 2.5 stroker kit or just get a t/c 2.3 ChAyOs00 Jun 11 2001, 08:27pm While visiting my local truck mod store, the guy there told me that on my 2.3L I could add a cat back, intake, and chip and get bout 30 extra horses. Is he full of **** or has anyone gotten that much out of this motor? focused Jun 11 2001, 09:01pm Well mebe with a catback and K&N filter and chip perhaps...thats not a whole lot if horsesh|t. I would believe that or close to it Roadrunner Jun 11 2001, 09:33pm In reality mods never add that much hp as advertised. If an article says that an intake will add 20 hp that intake is probably vs a very ****y design with a clogged filter, plus it is probably on a v-8. With my research the ranger can not make over 125 N/A hp without internal engine modifications. The intake manifole and cam are not made for it. Put you mods on and take it to a dyno, then you find out how much hp the things really give. 4bangin Jun 14 2001, 11:03am well researching my 2.3L i found the stock hp for a 1993 ranger was 96 hp and 130 ft/lbs. of torque, right now i have 104,000 miles and after a major tune up with performance mods including electric fan exhaust intake, and short belt, i have pulled a 93.5 hp at the wheels which corrects to 107.52 at the crank. with a regular belt my worst pull of the day was 88.7 hp corrected = 102 hp. i will be installing a pulley for the crank and alternator soon, new dyno results to follow. als oa ported and polished uppper and lower intake, plus a revised intake tube with nitrous will follow in the future focused Jun 14 2001, 06:03pm I live in Canada where the pollution law is'nt as monitored... what would i gain (hp) outta rippin the catalyst out and doing a whole new exhaust from the stock exaust manifold (header perhaps) back ? smokin2.3 Jun 14 2001, 06:15pm I cut off the cat and put on a flowmaster 40 series which ends before the axle. I wouldn't go buying a header. I hear pacesetter sucks, and all the others will run you close to $500. Anyway, I know the 94 2.3L comes with an exhaust manifold that is practically a header. All you need to do is take off the stock one and port it out, get rid of the rough edges, and polish it. The smoother it is, the less carbon will stick to it. You don't need a good aftermarket header till you are pushing some serious horsepower. Check out my signiture to see my mods, my website shows some pics too. juicedup20 Jun 14 2001, 11:35pm For the guy asking about getting 30 hp with intake, exhaust, and chip...........I WISH. I have the kurtz intake, a superchip, and flowmaster exhaust and I can hardly tell any difference, except a little better MPG. I would do intake and exhaust and call it a day since everything else is going to be expensive and produce pratically nothing. LowRedRanger Jun 17 2001, 10:57am hey how much would a turbo for a 96 2.3L cost and what kind of gains would you get from it. thanks the truck is my friends The Rascal King Jun 18 2001, 06:39am Originally posted by LowRedRanger hey how much would a turbo for a 96 2.3L cost and what kind of gains would you get from it. thanks the truck is my friends What exactly are you asking? How much it would cost to swap the current 2.3 for a 2.3 Turbo? That depends greatly on how much work your friend can do himself, what kind of deals he can find, etc. As for gains, again it depends on what he's looking for...the 2.3 Turbo was rated anywhere from 175 to 205 horsepower, and the 96 2.3 in the Ranger made right around 100. But the turbo engine is capable of making gobs of power...I know one guy getting close to 600 horsepower out of his. LowRedRanger Jun 18 2001, 07:25am oh i guess i didnt know what i was talking about then i thougt you could just buy a turbo for the current engine. thanks for the help though The Rascal King Jun 18 2001, 10:27am You can buy a turbo for the existing engine, but by the time you get through with the install, you'll find that a swap would have been much easier and better in the long run. Basically, the "party line" on turbocharging an N/A (naturally aspirated) 2.3 is that yeah, it can be done, and it can even be made to work pretty well, but unless you're doing it to prove it can be done, or just to have something different, or something like that, you're a lot better off just swapping them. LowRedRanger Jun 18 2001, 10:41am ok well thanks for the help |
