View Full Version : Methanol
02Tremor Sep 02 2005, 01:41pm I've got an 0 FFV and I want to run methanol because I can get it at ~2.00/gal I think the seals will hold up because of the truck being able to run on E85, but will the pump and injectors be able to handle that much flow? and I know I'd need a tune. Doug, Boss, any thoughts? TIA
rwenzing Sep 02 2005, 02:43pm 2002 Ranger Owner's Manual:
FFV engine (if equipped)
Your vehicle is designed to use (E85) Fuel Ethanol, “Regular” unleaded
gasoline or any percentage of the two fuels combined.
U.S. government regulations require fuel ethanol dispensing
pumps to have a small, square, orange and black label with the
common abbreviation or the appropriate percentage for that
region. Use of other fuels such as Fuel Methanol may cause
powertrain damage, a loss of vehicle performance, and your
warranty may be invalidated.
gopher_6_9 Sep 02 2005, 03:56pm Wait are you wanting to run pure methanol, or are you wanting to run a methanol/water injection setup? I assume a pure methanol, and in that case I don't think so.....

the reason they say that is because it's meant to run on up to 85% Ethanol, not pure methanol, it's not programmed into the PCM and the injectors and the like may not be able to flow enough to hande it. By volume Methanol has 60% of the energy "capability" of gasoline, it may take 2 times as much fuel to get the same power, but at the rate gas is going it'll be cheaper to run methanol. I'm just not sure if the fuel system can flow enough. If it can, all I'd need is a tune. Ethanol and Methanol both take a special type of seal to prevent the fuel "leaching" the moisture out of the seal and drying them up, causing failure of the seal. I think it's called Butyl rubber.
maybe you could fill a quarter of the tank with gas and the rest with methanol
BOSS 3.0 Sep 02 2005, 11:59pm E85 = 85%ETHANOL, 15% gasoline.
Methanol bad.
E85 is NOT methanol.
Just so we are clear on that...

I know that Ethanol, Methanol and E85 are 3 different things, I'm just wondering if it's feasable to run pure methanol with the stock injectors and fuel pump. :)

I'm just not sure if the fuel system can flow enough.Pure ethanol, pure methanol and E85 ethanol/gasoline blend ALL have much lower energy per volume than pure gasoline. An E85 FFV has a special calibration that allows it to calculate the ethanol percentage and adjust the A/F mixture for pure gasoline, E85 or anything in between.
Methanol is corrosive, burns without a visible flame and can cause blindness. It requires different fuel system materials than gasoline or ethanol and more expensive methanol-compatible lubricants.
Those are some of the reasons why Ford's owners manual tells you not to use methanol in an E85 FFV.
BOSS 3.0 Sep 04 2005, 12:40pm In 1980's Ford made the Taurus in an early flex fuel version that used M85 (85% methanol, 15% gas) and it failed (lack of viable infrastructure). Why go down the same road? E85 is more readily available.
I would LOVE to do an E100 version of a Whippelcharged 3.0L, but winter starts in WA would be a nighmare!
wulf-001 Sep 06 2005, 07:15pm that 2$ a gallon will not save you money, as you will get 10% less MPG or more running 100% ethonal... and i belive,, not positive.... meth is the same as some one said in a better worded way
02Tremor Sep 06 2005, 10:06pm The reason I ask this is because I can't get E85 here in Texas :( but Methanol (M100) is readily available. :) I can get enough methanol in 2 hrs to fill a pool, well, maybe slightly exaggerated. but I can get it by the truckload. Boss, with the proper tuning do you think the stock injectors and pump will handle the flow? I hase 110 gal sitting in my garage that I use in my sprint car. The only thing I'm worried about is the fact that it's "hydroscopic," I'm not sure if that's the correct term, the way it's always been described to me is that it will absorb water out of the air, much like brake fluid. It will have a Whipple put on it if I have anything to say about it. ;)
