Can anyone tell me how to tell if my 2001 v6 3.0l 4x4 ranger has flex fuel, I am pretty sure it does but just want to confirm it somehow before i go try ethanol (we just got a pump here and wanted to try it out once).

It will have a sticker with a leaf on it on the tail gate. Also it will indicate that it can run on ethanol on the fuel door. :drunk: :chug:

Let us know what kind of fuel mileage you get with ethanol if you can use it too.

Check the 8th digit in your vin#. If it's a U, you have a regular 3.0L. If it's a V, you have a flex fuel 3.0L. And just for reference, you will get worse gas mileage when using E85, but you will gain a few horses, as E85 has more oxygen molecules than normal gasoline, not to mention it's much more environmentally friendly.

Or just look inside the gas door. It should tell you if you can use E85. E85 will get about 20% less fuel mileage, but it cost less. If they get a pump near me, I'll be using it just to keep from supporting terrorism via large oil profits.

Here is a good article about Ethanol use in Brazil:

BTW: Where are you located?

Yeah it don't have that in there, i live in toledo, ohio area we just got one in town. It is about a $1 cheaper but you get lower mpg but i think it will equal out i think and is better for the enviroment and support local. Anyone know how to convert my truck so it can use it?

Anyone know how to convert my truck so it can use it?To convert a regular 3.0L Ranger to a 3.0L FFV Ranger would cost far more than it's worth. For starters, a few big hitters are the PCM, the tank pump unit and the injectors -these are all different on the FFV version. That's way over $1000 right there. And there are other differences as well.

Actually it doesn't equal out. The cost to operate a vehicle on E85 is slightly cheaper than the cost to operate the same vehicle on reg. unleaded gasoline as rated by the EPA:

my '04 ranger doesn't say it'll run off E85, but me being the poor college student, I went ahead and filled it up anyways. The O2 sensor came on but then went off with about 1/4 a tank left. seemed to run a little better too, but i guess its too early to tell if the E85 messed anything up

tnoble19,

you will have a code stored in the ECU memory even with the light being off. Check it now.

I would avoid the temptation to run anything but the usual gasoline in your tank unless you actually do have E85-equipped truck. Fuel system components are only cheap for people like Donald Trump to pay for....

You will be poorer if you don't operate your vehicle as the factory says you should.

The best move is to switch back before you do any more damage.

I've used E85 here for about four months. I've noticed an increase in acceleration (not dramatic, but noticeable) and my gas mileage dropped to about 14 mpg in the city for the first three months. Now I only get about 11-12 mpg - not sure why, but maybe the computer takes time to adjust the timing and fuel injection to E85(?). According to the EPA website, a 3.0L should get 12 mpg in the city running on E85.

Recently, the price of E85 has gone up and with the lower mileage regular 87 octane is cheaper per mile than E85. So I've switched back, at least until the price of E85 drops back down.
