i have heard that by using ram air with the stock MAF, the engine runs lean. if this is true and the IAT mod makes the engine add more fuel and advance timing b/c of the percieved cooler temp, could it also counteract the lean problems associated with the stock MAF not liking the forced induction? if so i would think that using the mods in conjunction could be very beneficial...:drunk:

another thing... i read on the boss3.0 page about the iat mod and it said you could use a resistor to make the engine run leaner to to get beter mileage... if someone wanted to rig a switch they could have a resistor for power and a resistor to get better mileage on the highway... just a thought...although i dont see how to make the stock system have less resistance...

I would guess it woud. Although gettin a true ram air setup is a hard thing to do. On a 2.3 or 2.5 you would have to do some serious modding to get a straight flow ram air. A normal ram air will improve air flow, but I doubt it will affect the fuel mixture severly.

im going to build a ram air system out of pvc pipe(roughly the same diameter as the stock intake tube) and replace the stock intake tube with pvc... i think it will force enough air to make a difference... the setup i have now makes a difference on the highway... the motor never gets loud and "boggy" going up hills anymore and all i have now is some radiator hose routed from the airbox to the grill... the pvc's larger diameter will allow more air to be forced into the engine....i was thinking though that with the proper resistance i could overcome the problem with the MAF and get enough fuel to match the air coming in... although there would have to be a switch on it cause i think that it would be too much fuel at idle and would run like ****... let me know what you all think...:afro:

this is what my ram air setup should look like when im done...

can anyone else see that? i cant... it could be this crappy comp at work though.. heres the link anyway

Looks good. The only advise I can think off is the shoter the ram air tube is the better. That way the air will keep as much velocity instead of slowing down in a longer tube. Post some pics when you get it done.

the thinking is a little flawed, the more open the intake and the more air cooling the maf wires, the computer will feel the engine is recieving too much air and run the injectors more and change the timing. i doubt it runs lean but rich, i had ram air and it ran richer than ****, the exhaust pipes would blacken up from it after awhile.. maf works on the fact that it requires specific voltage to raise the sensor wire temp to 200 degrees above the amiant wire temp, based ontheis voltage and the iat and a few otehr things the ecu is able to read how much air is entering the engine, ramir may not only force feed air but some air may not enter the engine since it can only flow soo much throught the intake that there is less air entering the chambers even though more air is going through the maf, it is a restriction flow issue. it is always best to tailor parts to the specific application and to tune the efi accordingly.

so, in order for this to work right, i would have to port the intake too? then i would have to upgrade exhaust also... i was planning on doing that anyway... is it possible to do the intake work myself? if so where can i find out what to work on...

the main key is maf placement, i am working on an intake that will move the maf near the middle of the intake tube then a k&n cone onthe end. that should help to reduce turbulence and give a more accurate flow reading so less part throttle over rich condiditon.

what about mounting the maf up by the tb?

Hey, I did that. Also the MAF mod. I've got pix if you want to see them. Got the idea off the new M3. The setup works fine, but it's touchy because there's no "buffer" space in the intake tract.
