I'm just curious what trans will bolt up to a 2.8. I might be getting a parts truck with a good running 2.8 but it has a bad trans. I have an aod and a trans off an 88 2.0. Would either of them fit?

Anyone?

AOD from a 5.0L? I believe the 2.0L wasn't a Ford engine. I doubt either would fit, I know for certain that the 5.0 bellhousing won't work.

2.6/2.8/2.9/4.0 were pretty much the same bellhousing. They're German engineered 60 degree engines. The 2.6L compared to the 4.0L would be like a 260 small block compared to a 400 small block.

I would look into getting a C5. If you want something with OD, (A4LD) then you will need to make something for the torque converter lock-up, like a toggle switch. I wouldn't recommend this transmission though, they're known to have issues. On the other hand, mines never given me any problems. Your best bet maybe some sort of standard 5 speed.

IIRC the 2.0 was a Ford engine. It uses the same trans the 2.3 did. Is the bellhousing on the manual trans 2.8 removable? I was planning on swapping the 2.8 into my truck and I want to do this as cheaply as possible.

So then a C4 would also work if he changed the bellhousing, right?

Yes. The 2.8L came with C-4, C-5, and A4LD transmissions. C-4 1974 to 1980. C-5 1983 to 1984. A4LD 1985 to 1986.

Also came with the crappy C-3, IE: the A4ld is a C-3 based with OD. :poke:

sorry i know this is a very old thred. so does that mean that when the A4ld in my 90 2.9L x-cab goes out i could use a c-4 or c-5 as well as a a4ld?
