Should I be running Synthetic or just regular dinosaur juice in my Explorer. I've only got 10,000 miles on it and want to treat it right from the beginning.

Any benifits or drawbacks?

Thanks.

The only drawback of running synthetic motor oil over conventional is the price. That aside, synthetic is definantly the way to go. It is designed to run better in your engine than standard oil ever could. Most people would argue that synthetic doesn't really help any because there will not be a noticeable performance gain. That's not what it is meant for. Synthetic will extend the life of your engine and keep it running better longer. Synthetic motor oil is made in an entirely different way from your standard oil because it is not simply refined crude. It has been designed to remove contaminants from the engine, reduce wear and friction, and keep your engine running cooler. All these lead to a happy engine that will hold up strong for 200,000 plus miles. I would highly recommend either Mobil 1 or Castrol Syntec. And don't try to change up on the oil weight, go with what your owner's manual states and use it all year long. On your vehicle it will be either 5w-20 or 5w-30.

Happy lubing.

I switched at 107,000mi. and have had no ill effects.

Synthetic also flows better for those cold mornings(easier start). Especially on those -25* days in Minnesota. :loki3: I'm sure NY ain't much warmer.

I run Mobil 1.

im a firm firm believer in synthetic. we used the high performance mobile 1 pure synthetic in our 351 that we raced for 4 years, hittin it every time we raced w/150 shot of nitrous. i have no clue how many bottles weve been through. and after every race, we changed the oil.. sometimes woudlnt have 100 miles on it b4 the oil was changed (street truck also).

tore it down 2 weeks ago to just freshen it up.. new bearing and whatnot. needed it too.
but as far as actual wear on our engine, as far as the cylinders go.. none.

we were impressed and will most definetly stick w/using it. i also run full synthetic in my accord.
but the $5.00 + a quart is stupid.

Thank you all. I think the Synth is how I'll be going.

Should I still change every 3,000?

I see that you all use Mobil 1, any thoughts on Quaker State?

Going hunting Saturday. The maiden voyage for My X.

Depending on the manufacturer of the oil they may claim interval advantages over the standard 3000. Mobil 1 states that you can safely go 5000 miles between oil changes and they now feature an Extended Performance Mobil 1 good for 15000. To each his own, first thing I ever learned in auto shop was that you can never change your oil too often. I change mine every 2000 even with full synthetic. It may seem unnecessary to some but better safe than sorry. As for Quaker State, I know I'm going to hear someone argue this, it is basically Pennzoil in my opinion and neither one will do your engine any good. I have worked in the lube industry for many years now and I have seen bad things with both Pennzoil and Quaker State. I have also seen many bad things from people going too long on their oil changes. That's just my two cents.

Don't know specifcally about their synthetics but why risk it when Mobil 1 is a proven oil.

My Dad thinks you only need to change your oil every 5000 miles...I beg to differ that it is still 3000 miles, maybe my brother can convince him(he used to work at Jiffy Lube).
