View Full Version : E-brake light coming on during braking

Well, the weather in MD finally turned cold and it is bringing out more gremlins in my '91 ranger that I didn't see before.

during normal driving conditions (engine warm or cold) when coming to a stop sign, my e-brake light comes on and then turns off once I come to a stop. The braking system is not hurting or anything as far as I know (see other braking post for possibility) but the back breaks are the ones associated with the e-brake right?

any thoughts?

Mike

possible ford used that light for the rear abs. but thats just a guess though. checkout the owners manual and see if that light is listed for anything else. the other thing may be to do with the actuall break shoes. someone here more knowledgable will help you.

Its not exactly an e-brake light, its just a brake system light, that happens to illuminate when the e-brake is applied. Check your brake fluid, thats what it sounds like. When you brake, the fluid moves in the master cylinder, causing the warning light to come on, but when you stop, it all settles back into the normal position.

Well, Ive diagnosed that prob at work quiet a few times, and its the first thing I suggest when people say something about a brake light coming on.

ya, i would check the fluid in the master cylinder, the same thing happened in my 94 when i would apply the brakes, i checked the fluid level and it was a little low (enough to where when i would brake it would shift and i guess cause the light to come on

If the fluid isn't low, bleed the brakes. There is a small cylinder in the master cylinder that stays centered when the system is working correctly. When you get air in the system, the cylinder can move off center since the brake pressure isn't even and activates the light. After letting off the brakes the cylinder re-centers and the light goes out.

My brake light used to turn on when I used the ebrake but it doesn't any more. If I don't remember it's on I find out when I try to go forward but can't do so easily :)
