View Full Version : Make a Functional Roush Scoop

I started working on making my Roush Hood Scoop functional. The same could be applied to a Mustang scoop. These are start up pics as the project has just been started.

Here is what I am starting with. This shows the scoop:
http://www.granitebydesign.info/gallery/d/174-1/HPIM1895.JPG

This shows the Open filter I currently have:
http://www.granitebydesign.info/gallery/d/178-1/HPIM1897.JPG

My thought has been to duplicate what I have seen in "functional" replacement hoods with a scoop. The problem is the $700+ price tag if they are even made for a Ranger. The basis for these is to channel the air to the vicinty of the open element filter. While this is not a "ram" effect, It takes outside cooler air and directs it to the filter. A Ram system would need to be a sealed system and working around water would be a problem. So I need to direct the air. This involves catching the air at the scoop and directing it to the flter. The white marks show the start and stop points. Because of the width of the Roush scoop I am able to avoid cutting any of the ribbing in the hood. You can see the white circle towards the center:

http://www.granitebydesign.info/gallery/d/176-1/HPIM1896.JPG

I then scavenged through the garage to see what was available. I used a shop vac tube and an end for it. I used a bandsaw to trim the back of it to clear the ribs in the hood. this will be fiberglassed later:

http://www.granitebydesign.info/gallery/d/180-1/HPIM1898.JPG

http://www.granitebydesign.info/gallery/d/182-1/HPIM1899.JPG

I then used glass cloth to fill the end and provide a surface to mate to the hoods bottom:

http://www.granitebydesign.info/gallery/d/184-1/HPIM1900.JPG

Fiberglass ruff trimmed:
http://www.granitebydesign.info/gallery/d/186-1/HPIM1903.JPG

and test fit:
http://www.granitebydesign.info/gallery/d/188-1/HPIM1902.JPG

This is as far as I got but it's enough to visualize the process. I will trace it onto the hood and cut the hole out smaller than the fiberglass end piece. Since I am gonna put billet strips over the opening of the scoop, I can drill holes to bolt the air tube to the hood and it won't show. I will also lay a bead of silicone between the hood and tube to secure it the rest of the way. Plans may change as I finish up. Once the tube is done I can install the scoop. I will make provisions to enclose the front of the scoop in the event of rain.

Let me know what you think.

*edit- the only clearance issue seems to be the heatshield on the K&N intake. I will take the rubber strip off, vut where needed, then reinstall the rubber. It should look clean.

for the rain thing, what about doing a little electrical trap door sort of thing on the intake? Looks like it oughta be pretty sweet though.

I think it's not bad for a scavenge job. It would look better with rectangle tubing instead of round tubing. I got the fiberglass cut now so I'll have some new updates soon.

The billet has two mounting holes that I won't need so it will be used to mount a block plate. It's easy enough like that. On your thought, If I had a shield over the top half of the filter it would shed the water. The air would go down the shield and get sucked back up from the filter. I had thought about doing that.

You never know until it's done.

i've been thinking about something similar to that. glad to see someone else do it first. i was thinking about routing mine between the fender and inner fender to the filter.

Look at all the billet on the front of my truck. The scoops not painted yet but you get the idea:

Started cleaning up the tube. It's primered:

Now what would be sweet is to make an enclosure for the air filter so it pulls from the scoop.

thats a very cool idea. i think the only thing i'd change is maybe using a larger flowing tube. the vac tube seems to be a bit small... maybe one thats wider but thinner. other than that, very cool!!

Funny you said that. Here's what it turned into.
I took the hood off. Layed aluminum foil down over the bottom hood area and layed up a few layers of fiberglass on that and wet it down. This made the back of the box the shape of the hood. I then bent up some sheetmetal to finish the box and attached it to the fiberglass. I wrapped it in some heatshield I had laying around. the blanket fits over it good. Just a hole for the exit is all that is needed and the box is hidden.

could this be done to the stock air box? like where it would enter through a opening in the air box, or would this cause motor damage since the air would completly bypass the filter?

underdog
Jul 15 2006, 04:34pm
Don't know. i guess you could install the air box upside down and cut off what was once the bottom.

What about using some 2" window A/C foam and some sheet metal around the K&N to help seal up the air from the engine compartment? Kind of like this.

That looks like a pretty good idea

but how far down?

Meatloaf
Jul 17 2006, 08:29am
You would have to run it all the way down and totally enclose the filter except for the top.

yea, but u wont b getting as much air as b4 u messed w/ it would u? bc it wont b sucking from all directions, hell idk.. it would b better whn ur moving thats for sure

I'm not looking for a sealed system. It would bring up water issues. As I progress I will have a fullproof system for the rain. I'll post pics as I get other stuff done. Right now it's the scoop and I think I finally got a clean coat of paint on it. Once that is one I'll move on to the box.

Cool, be sure to post detailed pics of your progress. I might do the same to mine since my scoop is nonfunctional also.

wayne sorry bout the threadjack, but how did you go about cutting the billet to fit in your custom locations? did you buy some billet grilles and hack em up?

my buddy wants to add some custom billet in his fog areas on his f150, but i guess his neighbor said that aluminum is hard to work with... any tips?

I took a main grill and using a bandsaw I cut it into the lower valance, 2 fog lites, and scoop. Cutting it to shape was easy, mounting it was tricky and slightly frustrating.

I have made small pieces of billet before. I took 1/4 x 1/2 x 3ft from Home Depot and made it. I cut them to length and stacked them. While stacked I drilled two holes through all of them. I then got an 8/32 bolt and slippied it through the holes. I did use some 1/2" tall brass spacers in between the billet. Add a nut on the other end and screw it down and it all clamps together nicely. I then used the bandsaw to cut it to shape. I then Painted the whole thing black. When dry I sanded the front to expose the aluminum. This gives a brushed billet that matches carriage works grills. The nice part about this method is you can include a small angle bracket in the sandwich to mount it.

Decent coat of paint. Not bad for a spray can. Very minor tiger stripes if you look close (not the reflection of the slats from the window):

looks good man...on the roof scoop note...theres a new ram around here with lund tape on hood scoops on the hood and roof...its got 4 of them...chrome running boards, fender flairs, and a 600 year old driver...the guy that drives it is really old, and for some reason that makes it funnier to me...

I haven't done anything different to the bay yet. It's still the K&N kit. The underhood is the only thing different and it'll be covered when I put the liner on.

That supercharger sounds really nice. wonder what a 2.3L would sound like with one and a Flowmaster 40. Idea for your filter make a box that has a opening in the top only for the tubing to enterthat way its the only air thats really going in.

LOL. Thats why we post- to share. I still have plans that will take this from what is semi neat to something very original. I want to make the opening a spring loaded flap that will open when the rpms increase. it'll take a whole redo but will be worth it.

I don't remember who made it or what car it was on but some one had a scoop that was operated via vacuum.. When they got on the gas hard the scoop popped up in front of the cowl. It would probably have to be operated by ported vacuum so it would stay shut when engine was off.

Gives me an idea.. before getting an FIPK, I could get a MAF adaptor, make a box out of some sheetmetal or aluminum I have lying around, get a filter, and do that kind of thing.

Or, not do anything, and spare my hood. 'Cause I don't seem to "measure twice, cut once"

kinda dumb and cheesy, but i thought about adding a waterproof computer fan to my intake on my civic...but on yours since it might not push that much air through it put two smaller ones in the box you built and force the air down...the only problem i found was at really high RPM's the fan kinda stops working as a pusher just a spinner...but i dont think you rev your truck to 9 grand so i am just throwing it out there
