On my 2000 3.0 I noticed something and just wanted to know everyones opinion. When I get down on it, like getting on the interstate it might downshift into second and then when you get up to about 55 you think it's going to shift because it kinda hesitates or feels like its all it's got and then it just pushes on through to like just past 60 and then shifts to 3rd..
Why does it hesitate like this? It's irritating especially when racing...

is yours a 5 spd auto or the old 4? mine (5 spd) holds 2nd until about 45 and takes 3rd to 65.
I love this tranny, I have nothing wrong with it. always shifts smooth and I really like having that extra gear. the only thing I don't like is the 1st gear wine. but I drove about 10 rangers when looking for a truck and they all did that. so it must just be part of it.

All FORD have problems with 2nd Gear. All Ford TRUCK / SUV trans wine! Regardless of Model. WHY do I say this? This is my third Ranger; we just bought a 02 Expedition and sold a 94 Explorer. My Father has a Ranger and Bronco II. ALL THE TRUCK / SUV’S WINE. It is a FORD trait ! ! ! ! ! We had our Explorer trans rebuild because 2nd gear was fried. Come to find out Explorer were well know for 2nd problems around 75,000’ish miles. Some kind of plastic gear or seal between 2nd and 3rd. My father had to rebuild his 91 Ranger and Bronco II trans after 85,000 miles.
I have been looking for any info on my 00 Ranger trans and now the 02 Expedition. I have never owed a Ford past 75,000 miles. We trade in our vehicle every 3’ish years. Not because we have a bunch of problems but we get tired of them and want something new. Believe me we keep this 02 Expedition for more then 3 years!

I've got the 4. I like it but it is just annoying. 1st goes to about 35 and 2nd to 60, 3rd goes all the way till 100 if you let it..4ths just the OD. 2nd really is a high gear though - if you drop it back into 2nd about about 40 you can take it all the way to 75 before it tops out. Mine doesn't wine alot - especally since I've been sound damping the whole thing...hehe.
