Okay this is my first tech article so here it goes...
After a time i went offroading I had a rock get caught and shoot up and hit my rocker panel good. Heres the damage:

I went to a shop and I'm not even going to say how much they wanted. After a trip to PepBoys and around $25.00 I came home with this:

And the contents from left to right:
Sanding Block and 2000 grit paper, black paint(purchased separetly), instruction booklet, Body Putty, Finishing Compound, Filler Primer, and Clear Coat.
http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l143/jrsyboi05/FullKit.jpg.
Now I will outline the steps involved. Do this at your own risk I assume no responsibily for damage to your automobile, this is here only as a guide.

First Step: If the scratch is down to the metal use the Filler/Primer to cover the metal. (In my case it was only down to primer)
Second Step: Mask off your working area with 3m blue painters tape for delicate surfaces, to protect your paint.
Third Step: Apply Body Putty about a 1/2" around the scratch. Dont worry about making it flush with the surface. Let dry 24 hours for best results.

Fourth Step: Wet sand the putty with the 2000 grit sandpaper around the block till its flush with the rest of the area(I had to buy more sandpaper) IMPORTANT: Wet sanding requires you to keep the work area wet and to soak the sand paper in water for about 1 hour before you use it. And change the paper frequently.

You should be left with something that looks like this:

After wetsanding you clearcoat will be scratched up, this is normal, it will look like this:
http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l143/jrsyboi05/AfterWetsand.jpg
Fifth Step: After you let the area dry up apply the paint that you bought (Duplicolor has factory colormatched paints available). Try to make this as smooth as possible. Let dry 24 hours.
http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l143/jrsyboi05/PaintApplied.jpg
Sixth Step: Mask off the area using the painters tape. Wetsand the paint down with 2000 grit sandpaper until its smooth (do a few strokes and check). Let dry 2 hours.
Seventh Step: Apply Clearcoat 1/2" around where the paint is. Again try to make this as smooth as possible. Let dry 24 hours.
Eighth Step: Mask off the area with the painters tape. Wetsand the clearcoat till smooth, make a few strokes and check. Now you should have the whole area looking the same if not youll have to keep wetsanding and might have to re-paint or re-clearcoat until it looks the same.
Ninth Step: Apply the Finishing Compound to you area around the whole area. Now let the compound dry for about 15 min. Now applying alot of pressure work the area really good. Your probally going to have to re-apply a few times. I cheated on this step I used the compound 2 times the used Meguiars Scratch-X another 3 times using a microfiber towel.

If you did this right your result should be:

Thanks for taking the time to read this. If you have any questions or comments post them below and I'll get back to you. And Good Luck!!

it's not a bad article, although you can still see the scratches and someone else already wrote an article on repairing scratches, sorry man.

yeah i know you can stil see them I'm goin to try polishing is with a buffer soon, I'm hoping that ill get the rest away. It looks pretty good in person though, plus it was my first time messing with any of that stuff. the Guy that did the article on scratches didnt cover body putty and re-painting, i think. And a little clear coat scratches look alot better than a big gash in the paint IMO

No offense and this comming from an ex-automotive painter turned tech. that looks like ISH... I can see your fngerprints in the paint that wasnt effected (thats why they gave you a block to sand with) and the whole rectangle thing seems to stick out more than the scratch did... Im sorry it was a great write up and seemed very informative, it just wouldnt fly on any of my vehicles... My 4x4 explorer is meant to get scratches... My pickup will be flawless forever...

Srry man A++++ for effort but high D for execution...

*EDIT* are you hand buffing that? I just realized you had a rag under the buffed spot...
If so go get a power buffer or take it to a boddy shop and pay the buffing kid 10 bux to buff it... that square and your fingerpirnts should clear up to original finish condition - the non clear coated scratch cover then wont be so noticeable...
