View Full Version : Speedo problems, need help!
9T5SVT Jan 02 2007, 09:33am I knew this would happen, but i installed silver guages this past weekend and of coarse my speedo is now off.......by a lot! i thought i did everthing like your supposed to, but apparently not. All the other guages seem to be ok, just the speedometer. CAn someone please help on how to fix this or is it a lost cause? Any help i would appreciate, thanks.
Steven
BlueMan Jan 02 2007, 10:40am Your odometer won't be affected by the needle being wrong, so if you drive at a fixed rate for a specific number of miles, then you can tell how much it's off. If there's any of those radar "your speed is" sign things near you, you can use them to tell you how fast you're going too.
Once you know how much it's off, pop off the needle and adjust it till it's right.
9T5SVT Jan 02 2007, 01:14pm what i was going to do was drive next to my wife's car and see how far of it is, but once i know how much it's off by how do i adjust it?
BlueMan Jan 02 2007, 03:02pm move it the amount it's off by that many MPH at the resting point and test it again.
9T5SVT Jan 02 2007, 04:22pm so if it's off by 10mph, would i remove the needle from it's resting point and put it at 10mph and then move it manually back to the resting point? sorry if i sound like an idiot, i've just never done this before. thanks
BlueMan Jan 02 2007, 06:46pm If it was correct before (not 10MPH fast) then yes, put it at 10MPH resting, then try it again and see if you went the right direction.
9T5SVT Jan 02 2007, 08:11pm thats my problem, the needle was resting on the little pin before i took it off. so one more time before i mess with it, once i find out how many mph it's off, i put the needle back on at the mph it's off. now once i put the needle on the mph that i think it's off do i leave it on that mph and drive it or do i manually put it back down to rest on the needle?
BlueMan Jan 02 2007, 10:47pm That depends on if it's 10 MPH slow or 10 MPH fast! If it's reporting fast (you're going 20 and it's saying 10) you need to move it up 10 MPH more from the resting point.
If it's reporting slow, there may be 10 MPH worth of pre-load on the return spring to keep it at zero when not moving. If that's the case you'll need to move it up to 10 MPH, and hold it (from the backside), pop off the needle, and put it back on at zero.
Does that make sense?
9T5SVT Jan 03 2007, 08:26am yes, i think that makes sense. i found out today that it's reading about 5-6mph or so fast. So the needle says i'm doing 45mph, but i'm actually doing 40mph. The needle doesn't move when i'm sitting still and it does sit on the peg when stopped as well. But almost as soon as i start moving it comes off the peg. So what your saying i need to do is move the needle to 15mph, then remove it (without moving the needle in the process)and put it back on at the zero mark, or where the peg is. I assume your speedo is like mine and starts at 10mph. Is this right? I really do appreciate all your help with this and the fact that you haven't given up on helping me yet. Thanks
BlueMan Jan 03 2007, 08:42am Yep, sounds like you're on the right track - you'll just have to try tweaking it a bit till it's back where it belongs. All good things are worth a little pain!
