hey..i've got an 01' extended cab edge 4.0L..and was thinking about lowering it. question is, i've been looking on RPS alot and all i can seem to find is info on lowering xl's and xlts...i did see one guy say lowering an edge is a PITA..but i just want to see what everybody has done or is suggesting..its a 2wd anyways, parents won't let me lift so i want to lower it. it would be nice to run 18's on it, don't really want to go all out with the 20's..any help would be greatly appreciated!! thanks

You could remove the rear block and crank the torsion arms down, unless you wanna go lower flip the keys and get shackles too. To find more info to help you go to search and type edge lowering

well i dont know how low i want to go..that and i just haven't taken the time to take some measurements to see what i want to do..i dunno if i wanna go for a mild 2/3 drop..i think that wouldn't be enough cuz its an edge..or if i want to go all out and get a 4/5..i don't plan on bagging it or nothing. im new to the lowered section here so pretty much everything that was said in the thread that talked about lowering edges was pretty much over my head. would a 4/5 look good with 18's?

good luck on the adventure, i dont know anything about edges. i just thought that it was funny that your parents wont let you lift it but they'll let you lower it. my folks were the total opposite, but i lowered it anyways. if its your money and your truck do what ever you want to it. if its they're truck i'd probably listen to them.

the biggest problem with lowering the edge is the torsion bar suspension. take a look at DUB Offroad Edition's truck from the older days. that's about as low as you'll be able to go unless you plan on going all out. then check out edgerat's truck. he did a full suspension redesign with coilovers.

by doing what EDGERAT did..how far did it lower the front end?

BlauSplash
Jan 04 2007, 07:42pm
Well your gonna have to modify your front suspension removing the torsion bar suspesnions, and replaceing the trans crosmember. Then your gonna have to come up with some nice coil overs which are not cheep by any means, then fabricate all the mounts for them to attach to the lower arms and to the new mounts above

You should ask the owners of the trucks via PM's to get the best answers to your questions.

flipping the keys is probably your best bet, when i get around to lowering my edge that is what ill be doing

easiest way to get the largest drop without doing what I did with the coilovers is by flipping the keys and getting the belltech lowering leafs for the rear.

I had that setup on my truck for about 18 months before I changed everything out for coilovers.

Good luck.

P.S. you can go here to see/read what to do:

yea i had a buddy of mine talk to a guy who has been recognized in mini truckin magazine and a few other things. and he said that it wouldn't be harder to lower an edge, but more time consuming. he said that he would have to take the whole front end off? is this true? any help guys would be greatly appreciated

Seems to me, that it has a similar setup to a control arm suspension, like the torsion bar toyotas.

but maybe I am wrong, as I have never looked under an edge. If it was me, I would just cut it off and bag it using newer ranger control arms or a toyota front clip, mustang II that sorta thing.

My 04 Edge.

Flipped keys. Explorer rearend swap. Total drop of about 4/7. Still working on it.

Next to an XLT with 4/5.

wow that looks really good. What else did you do to it to get it that low? Rear end lowering? stuff like that..

The Explorer rear basically gives you a flip kit. Puts the axle over the leaf springs.

Front was just flip the keys, add low profile bumpstops, and XLT shocks.

As you can see my camber is not that bad.

sounds pretty easy..how much you pay for it? installation fee?

disturbededge04
Feb 01 2007, 03:16pm
Whatever you can get a Explorer axle for. $200ish to $400ish
Bumpstops. $10
Shocks. $40

All told I have about $300 in mine.

Not bad for a drop. L/S rear with disc brakes and 3.73 gears.

Onephatranger and I did the whole install ourselves.

thats a pretty nice drop man...big props for you!!....what was wrong with the stock ranger axle that you had to get an explorer axle?

I just wanted the goods from the Expo axle swap.

You can do a flip kit on yours to get the same drop in the rear.

when you guys did the coilover conversion, you completely removed the torsion bars and mounted the coilovers on the stock lower arms, right?

disturbededge04

Yeah it is Billet.

We also have different grill shells since you have an 02 and I have an 04. My surround goes all the way around. That's probably why they look different.

Best thing to do is sell you Edge and buy an XLT.

See that's the easy way out. For most Edge owners it's like saying "It's too hard to drop a Ranger. You might as well buy a Dime." It's just not gonna happen man.

I'd rather deal with lowering an edge and having the edge look, than drive an xlt....
