Sort of "Drivetrain" question, sort of "Electrical", move if you must....

Anyway, my work buddy has a 01 4 door 4.0 Auto 4wd Edge. His 4wd stopped working, and he uses it often (firefighter and boater).

There is no 4lo or 4hi light on in the dash when key is turned on (lamp check). No clicks when selecting either 4Low or 4Hi. He first checked the fuses with an ohmmeter. All good (3 IIRC).

Then he pulled the shift motor. No sound or movement when removed and switch selected. T-case shifts ok manually.
There was NO POWER at the shift motor connector. I see one Hot all the time and one ignition switched hot on the diagram. Neither is present.

I swapped in my 4WD selector switch, because it was quick and easy. Still no workie.

Now, I would LIKE to swap in my Shift module, but I'm a bit leery. He can't "locate" his, and I'm not sure mine is compatible with his in the first place. If anyone can tell me for SURE that mine will work in his "one year newer, automatic, 4.0" truck, I'll do it, but first,

Where is the Shift Control Module located on his 01 4 door 4wd 4.0 automatic Edge?`
Where else should I be looking to help him? I tried to get him to take it to Ford and get the BCM codes pulled, but this local Ford dealer is (expletives deleted) and he doesn't "trust" them. I don't know where else to get a PIDS or WDS to pull those codes.

I've also read that 01/02 Rangers and Explorers had a high failure rate on this Electronic Shift Module (this and other forums).

Bottom line, we need to LOCATE his so I can check power and grounds.

Please don't tell me it's in the back wall of the cab......

Update: He took it to an ind. shop. The Shift Control module won't communicate to the tester. Normally, the tester can command shifts, read status, etc.

So, he's going to find a new one.

If anyone has one lying around, holler.

We're going to compare part numbers and may slap his into my truck to verify it's bad.

Oh, it was located in the pass. kick panel.
