alright...I have a '97 4.0 Ranger auto

I finally got my truck running and legal...BUT!!! while driving home, my truck's engine light comes on...I go to get it checked and it comes up as P1744...I check online what the code is and it comes up to be a Torque Converter Clutch System stuck in off position...but I look in my Chilton Manual and it says its a manual transmission fault...

do I have a OBDII or OBDI?

and how the hell do I fix the problem?

Your '93 is OBDI (Distributor on engine)
'95(+/-) and newer are OBDII vehicles (Electronic Distributorless Ignition System - EDIS)

Sorry, your profile saws '93 ranger and a '95, the post is a '97.

If the codes are on the '97 it is an EEC-V/OBDII. This isn't a "Franken-Truck" is it?

I just never updated my profile...I use to own a '93 and '95 but sold both to start 1 whole new project

Boss, the 4.0 has never had a distributor, they just went from OBDI to OBDII with the different sensors and ECU programming. :)

The P1744 codes is "torque converter clutch system stuck in off position" for the Ford OBD. I have no idea what that means, but I'll move this over to the EEC Diagnostics board and maybe they can help.

I know what the code means...

I did a little research but found no real answers...I just dont want to take my truck to the mechanic...Ive found that it could be a bad converter or solenoid...

just need advice/hints...but thanks for moving the thread to the correct area...

I was just clarifying what it meant, since in your first post you found two different descriptions for it. I should have said I was doing that. :)

P1744 usually means that the Torque Converter Clutch solenoid has failed mechanically. It can be accessed and replaced by dropping the trans pan.

Apparently there are other possibilities, though. Here (http://www.explorerforum.com/forums//archive/index.php/t-145492.html) is an interesting thread, especially the final post.
