OK this is round two.

My truck is a 2001 Ford Ranger 4X4 4.0 Sohc Automatic.

The problem is everytime you either turn on the AC or the defroster the truck stumbles and almost stalls out. The RPM gauge drops down to near 250 and back up to 650.

At the sugestion of a few of the members here I changed the Air Idle control solnoid/motor.

What eles controls the fuel air and signal for Idle when the AC or defrost is turned on?

Is there a sensor on the AC unit? A relay elsewhere?

Any help would be appriciated

EFI uses

Idle Air Contorl Motor
Coolent Temp Sensor
Mass Air Flow Sensor (a.k.a MAFS)
Ambient Air Temp Sensor (a.k.a intake air temp sensor)
O2 Sensor
Manafold Apsolute Temp Sensor (a.k.a MAP)

I have never hurd of a sensor for the AC for the idle the engine just makes up the extra RPMs.

Well....all of the above seem to be directly related when the AC is on and all of the above are also directly related when the AC is off.

except for the AIC solinoid.

Any other ideas?

possible bad AC unit? Maybe a bad bearing, extra load on motor when engaged and ECU tries to compensate?

Ford said that my AC unit was low on charge. And that they would not investigate anything else with the AC with the pressure low. They offered to fill it for $100. I said no thanks.

So I ll probably have it filled by a local mech I trust for half that.

I also had some tranny work done:

Filter and gasket

2 TSBs Seperator plate and relief valve (fixes sloppy shifts and 3rd gear slip)

Replaced the main shifting solinoid

Had ford re-adjust the bands ( did you know there are adjustments on the side of the transmission? And that the $100 ford service manual suggests you have your bands adjusted every 15k miles????!!! News to me.

I also had my leaking rear differential fixed.

And lastly I had the fuel filter replaced, as I now live in the city and have no place to work on my truck anymore.

The crappy news is ford said I need a new rack and pinion unit, they offered to replace it for $950 + tax

I called up fordpartsdirect.com for the rack and found that it will cost $250 less to have the rack shipping across the country then to buy it from my local ford. Go Figure.

Still the entire job is going to cost near $700 when everything is said and done.

Geeesh I need a new money tree.

The dealer tried to make me feel better by giving me a free car wash.

Anyhow...The transmission work came out perfect. In fact I am willing to bet it shifts better then factory.

I haven 't pounded it yet, just drop 15 miles to work. I ll update if my opinion changes later.

If any of you want to know what parts I ordered for my 2001 Ranger automatic, let me know and I ll post a complete list.

I recommend anyone with over 70,000 miles who has the third gear lazy shift, and or lazy shifts period have done what I did.
