Hello all,

I’m a first time poster here needing help. I have a problem that hopefully I can explain in plain English so that it’s easy to understand.

Basically I have a 00' Ranger 5-SPD with about 50K miles on it. I have had zero problems with this truck until recently. I have developed a 'squeak' from what it sounds like the middle/rear of the truck. The weird thing is, it has changed how it makes the squeak over a 2-3 month period or so.

Little background: I was cruising home one day doing about 60 when I heard what sounded like 3 gun shots go off sort of near me on the freeway. Then about 1-2 seconds later 2 more ‘shots’ were heard. I figured it could have been another car backfiring so no big deal. I don’t know if it was related to my problem or not but from that point on, I noticed my problem.

My problem has been in 3 different stages so far.

(1) I first noticed the squeak when I was slowly rolling (either forward or reverse) and when the clutch was fully engaged and I was NOT giving it gas. You remember when you were first learning to drive stick you would leave it in gear and did not give it enough gas so the vehicle would jump a lot? Well that is when it would squeak (when you felt the clutch pulling the truck to move). It would also squeak if you were at a lower speed (30mph and below) and use your engine to slow you down while the clutch was fully engaged. It would be a constant squeak then. All of the sound would stop if you disengaged the clutch. Instantly I thought “oh man, I need to get this clutch looked at”. (This went on for about 2 weeks)

(2) The second phase of the squeak stopped making the noise like it did in phase (1) and only made it in reverse and with the clutch fully engaged. If I were coasting backward with the clutch disengaged, it would not make the sound but once I engaged it, it would go ‘squeak, squeak, squeak’, over and over speeding up with the speed of the truck.

(3) Now the third phase no longer makes the noise it did in phases (1) or (2). It will only make the noise when taking off moving forward. It makes the squeak starting from a stand still or at a low speed (like slowing down to make a turn then speeding up again). The squeak would go ‘squeak, squeak, squeak’, over and over speeding up with the speed of the truck until I get to about 30-35 then it would stop.

That is the problem I am dealing with. I am afraid to take it to a tranny shop just because I am not sure if that is the problem so I wanted some other opinions. I am not sure if this is related or not but my parking brake makes a bad squeek when I engage it. (Can that cable be oiled some way?)

Thanks for taking the time and reading this post lol.
