View Full Version : 4 link w stock tank????
5twnty7 Jan 19 2007, 11:11pm aight well i bought my link from sd a while ago bag n bars setup was gettin ready to install it when i ran into a snag...... the uppers r 24"eye to eye tryin to run them from front to back seems to be impossible cause i cant get both of them at an equal angle(one would be straight n the other at a 45 or so)because of the stock tank. where the spare tire was is where i have my tank and compressor which i really dont want to move them, would i be able to run a crossmember under my tank and run the bars from there to the axle??? any pics off diff setups w the stock tank would be great. thanx for the help
nusensesd Jan 20 2007, 01:50am do it right.. the first time you drag your frame your going to punch a hole in the tank. The stock ranger tank hangs to far down below the frame to be safe on a bagged truck.
Either do some sort of a swap to another tank or move the tank to the bed.. Whatever you do don't bag your truck with the stock tank in the stock location. Your just asking for troubles..
Kurtis M Jan 20 2007, 08:59am Someone had an awesome truck here, just as an example, even with a modded tank it leaked and blew up on him, I would take all precautions to avoid this myself, a new, even larger, gas tank can be put in without much work. Better that than sitting on the side of the road watching your truck burn.
Soeffinblack Jan 20 2007, 09:10am lol man what wrong with dragging and getting a whole lot of flame with the sparks as well that would look tight...
5twnty7 Jan 20 2007, 12:06pm lol ya i wasnt really planin on dragin or if i did i would raise the tank as much as i could n put a skid plate that wraped the whole bottom of the tank.only problems w changin for a diff tank or even a fuel cell in ca is in order to pass smog u have to have the original filler neck n blah blah blah. this is y im tryin to go around a tank swap and jus link it w the tank where it is
Soeffinblack Jan 20 2007, 03:42pm hahaha you can ALWAYS DO wha tthe poor man does, take your gas tank and strap it down in your bed and enclose it so it cant be seen at all. I did it without teh whoel enclosing thing. I had to get in someones face for throwing a cigarette butt in the bed of my truck.

if your going to bag it to lay you'll drag it.. I don't care what anyone says. As soon as it lays frame you are going to drag it. You may not drag it all the time but you will..
Not only that but what if your truck blows a line and you lose your air? If the frame drags, say you punch through your protective cover and then sparks happen.. There are many ways of getitng around the smog laws. You can get a tank made for you and as long as they put a filler neck on it you are good to go. Me since I have a 95 I went with a Bronco II tank.
5twnty7 Jan 21 2007, 12:56am it gunna take alot to punch through a 1/4" plate

The bottom line is it is unsafe for everyone on the road.

tell you what.. You do what you want to do.. Since you obviously don't care to hear about people that have done it before.. It ain't that hard to relocate your gas tank..
Have fun and I hope you don't punch a hole in the tank cause guess what.. First time you do that REALLY THIN PLASTIC TANK isn't going to take much punishment..
You do it right the first time and then you don't have to redo it later.. Not to mention the fact that you really can't lift the tank that much nor the fact that the stock Extra cab tank goes from the rear axle to right underneath the drivers seat..
Have fun... I'm not going to argue with you what should or shouldn't be done.. I am in California (San Diego as a matter of a fact) and I found a way to do it the safe way cause there was no way in hell that the stock tank was going to remain in the location it was at.. I like my bagged truck..
5twnty7 Jan 21 2007, 12:48pm aight coo im in sd as well so u kno about the smog bs who around here can build a tank im not gunna put it in the back of the bed tryin to go for sumthin clean and still be able to put my bike in the back a few guys told me about gettin a bronco 2 tank but i have a 98 and it wont work srry to be a d**k but when people cant seem to comprehend what im sayin........
JohnNetzlof Jan 21 2007, 01:38pm ya i wasnt really planin on dragin
Thats what we all said. but seriously, do it right, get a cell or put the tank in the bed, want it to be clean, build a sheet metal houseing to mold the tank in.
IMO Full Cells are the only thing I wanna run tho.
WeldFlash Jan 21 2007, 01:52pm Why won't the BII tank work?? I guess you want a bolt in item... well if your bagging your truck yourself then modifiing a mounting system to properly mount your gas tank shouldn't scare you...
Your truck catching fire and going boom-boom should however....
Wanna haul a bike... build a trailer.... JMO
There's tons of ways to mount these important components up in a safe manor and still look clean...
WeldFlash Jan 21 2007, 02:04pm or how about mount the tank in the back of your x-cab....yeah that'll keep the bed clean!!! LOL j/k
5twnty7 Jan 21 2007, 02:05pm as i herd they changed the fuel system from 98 up so im not to sure what all would have to be done to mod a b2 tank to work or my fuel setup
5twnty7 Jan 21 2007, 02:07pm or how about mount the tank in the back of your x-cab....yeah that'll keep the bed clean!!! LOL j/k
lmao haha then where i put the 4 12's hahaha
bdpaco Jan 21 2007, 02:10pm with the 98+ rangers it uses a retutnless gas system so you cannot use an aftermarket fuel pump with out changing the fuel system back to the older style system...as long as you use the stock fuel pump you can use a fuel cell or BII tank..I know that you can use an adapter or make something to mount your stock fuel pump on a cell...a BII tank I am not sure on, but it shouldnt be hard to fab something to make it work
Mightygreenrang Jan 21 2007, 04:22pm OK so you want it bagged but not to looked bag, do yourself a favor and leave it static. If your not willing to cut the floor out and move the tank then maybe you should stay where your at, cuz when you lay out without good size notch on those 20's your not going to lay any lower than a s-10 with a 4" rear drop. You can run a wishbone 4 link and keep the tank in the stock location but whats the point. Its like leaving a bomb under your truck and saying o it won't go off. IF you want a bagged truck be willing to do some cutting. Not trying to be a ass just giving my opinion.
slammedxonair Jan 21 2007, 06:03pm or bag it but not to lay just to have switches
Greggy18 Jan 21 2007, 06:42pm there are plenty of clean ways to mount the stock tank in the bed...dig around through the snapshots section or you might be lucky enough to have the search bring something up.
5twnty7 Jan 21 2007, 07:27pm aight ill put it this way the truck will be used a lot not jus for weekend or jus shows i race mx durin the week i have my bike all my gear gas cans n so forth i cant put the tank in the back otherwise nuthing will fit so pretty much all that it seems i can do is jus get the kp kit n re-fab the tank crosmember to lift the tank a lil bit more. i put a straight edge along bottom of frame, n tank jus needs to be raised approx 2 inches so gunna raise it about 3 n put a 1/4" skidplate around the whole bottom of tank and wrap it up so its not jus flate across bottom of tank which when its dropped should still have about 3/4-1" between tank n ground
bdpaco Jan 21 2007, 07:36pm goodluck getting that tank raised enough...
Greggy18 Jan 21 2007, 08:08pm if you use your truck for all that, then you might as well not even bag it...cause you will have to cut a nice chunk out of your bed for your notch and your wheels to clear...even without a gas tank in the back, you aren't going to have any room to put any of you racing gear. and you'd be lucky to get your bike in the back...once you bag a mini, you more or less loose all of you cargo hauling ability with the bed...if you want your truck bagged and still be able to haul your bike and equipment, why not throw a hitch on the back and buy or make a small cargo trailer to haul your bike. hell if you do it that way you could flip the tow ball over and it would double as somethign to drag on. listen to the guys on here that have been through all this before...if it was possible to get a ranger tank lifted high enough in the stock location to still be able to lay and drag, then somebody would have already done it, cause it would have saved a lot of hassles. like the one you are running into right now.
slammedxonair Jan 21 2007, 09:00pm you have to make a new crossmember to raise the front of the gas tank ive heard of somebody doing it not sure who though and which tank it was. might have been skruba but im not sure. but just do a fuell cell i know people put crotch rockets in there trucks that are body dropped.
BlauSplash Jan 21 2007, 09:46pm Simple answer is do about a 6 inch body drop on the bed. Add a gas door in the floor and mount a fuel cell between the frame rails behind the axle and your compressors and air tank on the outside of the frame rails. You will have a more shallow bed, but it will still have a flat floor, and can haul stuff.
You will NOT get that stock tank high enough and plated in enough to protect it without cutting the bedfloor and cabfloor out to raise it high enough.
Kurtis M Jan 22 2007, 11:02am Yeah why not c-notch the bed and cut some coils on your drop kit, the ride would be a little rougher than with bags but if your not going to try to lay frame or get hella close whats the point of wasting time and money, and even more time and money in the future when you need to replace something, likes valves or bags. For what your hauling I don't think theres much point for bags.
Mightygreenrang Jan 22 2007, 04:20pm Like said above your not going to get the tank to raise 3" unless you cut the cab floor and the bed floor for it to raise. Do somemore research before you jump into this, we are trying to tell you what is best, leave it static, you WILL need big notch for those 20's.
WeldFlash Jan 22 2007, 05:13pm Yeah, if the tank could have been raised 3 inches don't you think Ford would have done that??? I mean these trucks aren't just thrown together with spare parts, they have been designed to maximize the use of almost even inch of space.... Besides if you do ever drap, even by accident and that skid plate isn't anchored absolutely perfect and it comes free, you may loose everything bags, brakes, tires, wheels.... and rip a nice hole through that gas tank your triing to save....
Tuckin Eh Jan 22 2007, 05:42pm I sure hope he gets the point by now.
clenzer72 Jan 22 2007, 07:56pm Simple answer is do about a 6 inch body drop on the bed. took the type right off my keyboard. put a cell under the floor in the back of the bed...raise the floor to go over the notch and cell....perfect for hauling a bike and gear.
before i went to cell i was fully bagged wtht he stock tank in it's original location....trust me, snagging and scrapping that thing by accedent is scary. plus, you'll notice if you air the truck up in the front, air out the back the first thing to hit the ground is the tank! accedents happen...id rather it not be with my tank on the ground.
OH, ever have someone accidently hit your rear dump switch on the freeway doing 70??????? Now that's scary with the stock tank there!!!!!
nusensesd Jan 23 2007, 01:12am OH, ever have someone accidently hit your rear dump switch on the freeway doing 70???????
No but I've purposely done that.. :naughty: :driving:
Rangerbrown Jan 23 2007, 02:12am that ain't right
clenzer72 Jan 23 2007, 10:03am No but I've purposely done that.. :naughty: :driving:
yeah...but not with the stock tank still in place????:dunce:
nusensesd Jan 23 2007, 11:15am yeah...but not with the stock tank still in place????:dunce:
Nope.. since its been bagged its had a B2 tank...
that ain't right
Yeah it is.. It creates thousands of tiny little sparks.. Its pretty..
Kurtis M Jan 23 2007, 12:44pm I bet people around you back off and give you room, haha, thats one way to get people off your ass.
Greggy18 Jan 23 2007, 02:34pm i did that to a dude in a taurus who was riding my ass one day on the intersate...wheni finally let him pass, i figured he was going to be pissed, so i flicked him off...but i felt bad cause he was giving me a thumbs up and yelling that was sweet. haha
