Guys, I've been thinking about doing some performance mods on my '98 B4000 2wd since the warranty has expired. What are some good "bang for the buck" bolt on performance items? I'd like to do some of the mods myself to save some coin so ease of installation is important but not necessary.
Thanks,
W.
Probably one of the best ones is a good catback system. Stay with 2 1/2" in and no bigger than 2 1/4" out. If you do duals, probably no bigger than 2" out. This will keep your low end torque. I personally like Flowmasters, either a 40 series if you want it loud or a 50 series for a quieter system. Much less expensive than a Borla or Gibson system, but you have to get the pipes bent yourself. Next up the ladder would be a larger throttle body, around 63-65 mm, and then a larger MAF, 70-75mm works good. Do the last in conjunction with a KKM or K&N intake. Headers are a good performance improver, but expensive and difficult to install. And right now, they don't offer them for 98s and up. They have them for 98 Explorers with the 4.0, I'm trying to find out what the difference is. After you've made all the bolt on mods, then look at either a Superchip or Diablo chip. You need to do this last so it can be programmed for your other mods. Nitrous is also a good addition for the occasions you want to use it, either a 50 or 75 hp shot. 100 hp systems will work, but I think they are a little hard on the engine.

Summit & Jegs also have good offerings.
