My check engine light is always on but no one seems to be able to read the code. I've got a reader that works on three other cars fine but just reads err in mine and shows no code. I've taken it to autozone and a mechanic and no one can read it for some reason.

Make sure that there is power to the Data Link Connector. It is on fuse #5 in the dash fuse panel.

If that doesn't work, try a search on the OBD-II forums at http://www.obd-codes.com

don't think that's it. Fuse looks fine and it is powering up it scrolls something I can't decipher and then starts counting 1 2 3 then goes blank and either stays blank or goes to err and then counts 4 5 6 and then err or shuts off?

Try another scanner. Go to Autozone or someplace like that and let them give it go.

i wonder if your truck is one of the many vehicles that have an obdI system with an obdII port. was very common during the 95 to 96 model years on american cars.

I'm assuming that could be possible but I thought I remember hearing that the obdI systems were under the hood only or maybe it was both but mines only got the port under the steering wheel. Should autozone be able to check obdI? I'll have to stop there tomorrow if that's the case.
